US drivers Licence in Virginia (from UK)

I moved to the US in May to be with my now husband. I have a UK driving licence and I have no idea if can drive on the roads legally with my UK licence. I know I will eventually have to get a US licence but I am not finding any clear answers as to where I stand right now with the rules. Can anyone help me? Thanks

New Residents

Within 60 days of moving here, you must obtain a Virginia driver's license. If you currently hold a commercial driver's license (CDL), you must obtain a Virginia CDL within 30 days.

If you are age 18 or older and you hold a valid driver's license issued by a U.S. state or territory, a Canadian province, France, Germany, or South Korea, you must pass a vision screening test. However, you may not be required to:

• take the two-part knowledge exam or the road skills test
• show proof of successful completion of a driver education course or hold a learner's permit for 60 days.

If you are age 18 or older and you hold a valid driver's license issued by a country other than Canada, France, Germany, or South Korea, you may not be required to show proof of successful completion of driver education or hold a learner's permit for 60 days. However, you must pass the two-part knowledge exam, road skills test and a vision screening.

If your license has been suspended or revoked by another state, a Virginia license may not be issued until your driving record in that state is cleared and you meet Virginia requirements.

In general you can drive on your UK license for a limited time. The rules are different regarding the amount of time you can, and varies from state to state. If you have filed for AOS and have your EAD or green card, and have a valid UK license in general the process will be simplified for you. You'll want to check out your state's DMV website, bring the documentation they ask for, and head to the DMV.

You'll most likely need to take a simple written test and a road test. Then you'll have the state driving license. You shouldn't have to start over as a brand new driver at least. But remember it varies so be sure to check.
