Haven't been updating address and filing N-400

I'm hoping to send in my N-400 but came across a bit of an issue regarding my change of address, or lack thereof. In short, USCIS has had my parents' home address on file for me for probably the last eight years. Problem is, during, that time, I haven't always lived with them (went out of town for college, moved back in, then moved out). It never even crossed my mind to update my USCIS address (for what it's worth, I just updated my address online earlier today) since I stayed within the same city and always had access to any mail that was sent to that address. I do I realize I violated a somewhat strict regulation/law.

So, my question is how do I handle this with regards to my N-400? I accurately listed all my addresses over the past 5 years, including my parents', but I'm wondering if they will cross-reference it with their system and wonder why it doesn't match up. Should I write an explanation in a cover letter to include with the form? Or is it not worth even mentioning since presumably the address they have on file now matches my current one.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice. I want to be 100% transparent and honest with them on this, but it's difficult to know how to proceed without knowing exactly what they're looking at.

I would maybe write a clarification that says that while the address they had on file for you all that time was your permanent mailing address, your personal address changed a few times. Lots of people leave their parents' address as their "permanent address" for YEARS! I know I did!

Thanks! That's actually a very useful distinction to make with them (permanent mailing vs. personal). I do think I'm better off writing about it just to cover my ###.

I know you are supposed to update them every time you move, but I NEVER did. I moved several times since I have obtained my GC and when I filled in my application, I listed all the addresses and the times I lived there, even though I never officially told them that I moved there. The mailing address they had for me was my MIL's house. It happens! I'm sure it will be ok!

Just update your address online. Failing to update your address is like a 0.5 out of 10 on the scale of USCIS offenses. Good luck!
