I am curious as to what the Filipino members of Vj feel about president Dutertes apparent disdain for America.

He has just made an important trip to China this week, one in which he believes he will be getting 13.1B in trade deals. He is also planning a trip to Russia to meet with Putin shortly as well. He has stated maybe he will require Americans to get a visa to visit the Philippines as Filipinos have to get one to visit the USA.

Does he not realize how many millions of dollars a year are sent from America to the Philippines? It is not the other way around. What country was there with food water, rice, medicine, housing and labor after Yolanda in 2013? Not mother Russia or China from what I read, The US helped as she always does. He stated the relationship has been one way for 50 years. Really????

My fiancé has her visa in hand and I can fly her here whenever we chose, however I am planning to go visit her Dec 2-21 to visit with her family and allow them and her time to celebrate before we go to America as it will be quite sometime before we go back to the Philippines.

Do you all feel it is safe to wait until Dec to get her? I mean he is making headlines almost daily. I just would appreciate everyones thoughts on this delicate matter.

I think you'll be fine for December.

I am not so "hesitant" maybe is the word about the possible changes just yet; but, at the same time, I am in same position as you and hoping withing 3-5 weeks my partner will have his visa in hand and can travel.

It is a bit of a concern don't get me wrong. He had his medical scheduled for the morning of the protests at the embassy so they canceled his appointment, luckily was able to reschedule quickly.

Again though December seems fine. I don't think any drastic changes would be made or implemented so quickly.

Best of luck and congrats!

I think going to visit in December is ok; like Ben&Zian said, Duterte can't implement any of his changes THAT quickly. I plan on going to the Philippines in the end of January for my grandmother's birthday and by that time I'm so afraid he may actually have some new immigrations rules set for US citizens. I admit, my husband and I are Duterte supporters (for the most part, in terms of what he has done thus far for cleaning up the country). However, it is quite worrisome that he is so hell-bent on ruining/destroying ties with the US, and looking to China and Russia for alliances. For me, he seems to be acting like that little brother that wants to show his big brother that he can do things himself without his big brother's help because there are others who are "eager" to help him.

As of now, I read that the US ambassador said the US-Philippines relationship is still solid (this is even after Duterte told Obama to go to hell and after he teased Goldberg as being gay). Here's hoping it stays that way

Thanks for the quick response you two, I love the country and have visited five times, It is hard to see the abject poverty right in your face and as I look around and see soo much natural beauty and natural resources available to pull the country out of poverty, I too was a supporter and I like his can do attitude and maybe he's trying to leverage the South China Sea decision to get China to play nice, what his desire with Russia is , I have no idea. Weapons? If you state your not going to war, then that is an expense you do not need.

I will continue to monitor the situation closely. I am not leaving anything to chance, If a cat 4-5 Typhoon is tracking towards Cebu, I am flying her to safe ground as soon as I am aware. We lived through Yolanda and it was hell, her brother and Uncles homes lost their roofs, I could not get ahold of Jean for 72 hours not knowing if she was alive or dead. i could write a book with all the travails we have had. She ended up getting typhoid as well after the typhoon.

Good Luck to all

I can only say I'm not surprised by his actions and talk. What concerns me is if the Filipino population would stand up against him not if, but when he starts down the Marcos path. It's something that Filipinos must consider.

This is how American's get kicked in the teeth. Maybe we should pick up our toys and go home and when Duturte calls my be no one will be home to answer his call typhoon or no typhoon.

I totally agree with you on this as well. My wife and I were originally and still are supporters of him because we have seen for ourselves what his domestic policies are like in Davao. That is why I love Davao and I hate having to go through Manila when flying into the country. But even my wife is getting tired of his antics of always running off at the mouth and then having to retract or apologize later for what he said.

I do believe that he will retract what he said in China at a later date because I do not think that he recognizes how worldwide the media is today. If he says something inflammatory it can reach to audiences around the world in minutes. He needs to stop being a Mayor and be a President. I do believe that he will try to enact some immigration policies on people coming from the USA, all because he was hurt that he was denied a US visa some years ago.

Which is sad because the number 1 country that sends the most remittances to the Pinas is the USA. Also where was China during and after Typhoon Yolanda? If I remember correctly the company IKEA sent more aid than the whole country of China did. The Philippines had to rely on US Marines Ospreys to fly in and take aid to areas that were cut off due to the Typhoon and pull out hurt people. But Duterte is blindly being lead by his friends with the NPA and Bayan that absolutely hate the USA and love China.

Rely on the Marines? The best thing the U.S. sent was a carrier ... a floating city plus it arrived with nuclear power plants and a big hospital!

China sent a knock-off Honda generator and a sack of rice.

I do agree Duterte needs to stop thinking like a mayor and more like a president.

And for sure get over his "bent nose" on being refused a visa.... 97% in the Philippines get denied tourist visas to the USA.

My thoughts exactly...how far behind is "Martial Law?" and all that goes with it? Is Beijing going to offer him exile like Reagan did for Marcos if it goes that far?

That was one of the best things that we sent them. But we also sent the Ospreys as well which are airplanes that can fly like a helicopter as well. So they were able to go places where airplanes could not go. So they could pick up injured people and drop off supplies to the people stuck in the hard hit areas.

But if you listen to my wife's nephew we(the USA) is the cause for anything bad that happens to the Philippines.
