Shanghai Pudong Airport connecting flight

Hey all

Firstly, I wanna thank the geniuses who came up with this site. It's seriously helped us a lot with our visa process. I have everything and all that's left is to fly to the US!

I have questions for anyone who has gone through Shanghai Pudong Airport recently.

1) Is it true that I have to fill out the arrival AND departure card on the plane even though I've only got a 3 hour layover? I'm flying with Shanghai Airlines from Kuala Lumpur then connecting on a Delta Airlines flight to Narita.

2) Which terminal does Shanghai Airlines land?

3) Will I have to go through immigration twice?

4) Is a 3 hour layover enough?

I would really appreciate some insight.

Can't wait to be with my Husband. This married single life is so old!

Have a great week!

I cannot answer to Shanghai, but I suspect it will be similar to Beijing. International Transfers have their own line that they pass through at the Customs/Immigration section of a Chinese airport. It's a fast pass if you will. You arrive to the line, they verify your connecting flights, and usher you on your way. Chinese customs is notorious for not checking much of anything and shuffling people along. When you arrive at your destination, you will need to clear their customs as well.

1. The card can, and should be filled out on the airplane, they distribute them prior to landing. You can ask an attendant if you need to fill out the card, since you are just an international transfer(however I can say from the time I spent in the customs line, I saw people using the international transfer line had these cards filled out).

2. http://en.shairport.com/pudongair.html (ShangHai Airlines (FM) arrives at Terminal 1)

3. You will need to go through Chinese Customs when you arrive, and then Japanese customs when you arrive to Narita.

4. 3 hours is more than enough time, even during the busiest times I only ever spent an hour and a half in China customs, in Beijing which is a far busier airport. International Transfer should make your trip through customs even quicker.

Chris and ZhiJia Thank you!

There's just so many different stories about that airport. I've also read that as of August 2016, China has tightened security at their airports. The thought of having to reclaim my luggage on one floor then rushing to another floor just sounds so exhausting! It seems a few people say that luggage is often not checked to the final destination when going through Shanghai so.....yeah. Let's hope all goes well! Thanks so much!

Thanks for replying everyone. Looks like we MAY re-book. I've been looking at the flights for a few days now and KL to Shanghai is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS delayed. I'm talking over 2 hour delays. Ridiculous!

You should call and ask the airline. As I recall, I didn't go through Japanese Immigration and Customs when I came back to U.S. from China.

Based on their flight details, I didn't see them as coming to the US, but going to Japan. It was only indicated that they were flying to Narita, which is why I suspected they would have to clear Japanese customs.

Hey there

Sorry. Maybe I wasn't clear. My bad. My concern was not Japanese Customs at all. My concern was China and having to go through customs upon arrival and then having to clear customs again to board my next flight, even though my layover is only 2 hours.

But no biggie. Ticket changed. Not gonna be flying through China or their hassle. Not now or EVER.

Thanks!

There is no departure customs from China, or any country that I know of for that matter, only entry customs.

I transited through PVG in March 2016. It was a United->Asiana changeover on the same booking. Despite alarm bells about a visa requirement in the check-in system, United advised me to ignore it as it was a transit. I arrive at PVG and try to transit...nope...PVG staff told me "no transfer United Asiana" and directed me to entry customs instead. Watched passengers from same flight transit to other airlines. There are no airport staff from either airline in that area, so on the advice of the flight crew, who were standing there, I did go ahead and go through customs rather than try to get an explanation from the transit desk.

Customs line was a special line on the FAAAAAAR left of the customs area specifically for 24-hour visas. There were only a few people in line, but it still took a half hour. Cost nothing. They stamped my passport and sent me to the luggage area, which had a line nearly an hour long (I'm nearly my flight time now), but thankfully they waived everyone through upon realizing the line had gotten too long for bag checks (which were just being chucked through the X-ray machine already). Ended up having to check my luggage back in with Asiana, go back through the border patrol type checkpoint (make sure the arrival/departure card is filled out or you are going to be doing it now), and made it to my flight with about 5 minutes to spare.

The moral of the story... If you fly through PVG, just assume you *might* need a 24-hour visa and budget time according?

As for other airports, I've had no issues transiting in Incheon or Narita on United->United, Asiana->United, and United->Asiana flights. My layovers in HK were long enough to require a visa waiver pass through customs, but that's it.

Hi, looks like you wont be flying through PVG but ill share some not so nice experience.

I had my flight todsy from Malaysia to Chicago via Shanghai.

My first flight was Shanghai Air and then United Airlines.

1) I had a 10hrs layover. i fill the custom forms.

2) Terminal 1. But united Airlines is at terminal 2. So i had to go out from immigration and gonto terminal 2.

3) For me yes. I go through immigration twice.

4) I had 10hrs layover which is more than enough. But if i only have 3hrs, i dont think i will have enough time especially travelling alone with my baby.

When i check in Malaysia they said my luggage will be check through so i don't have to take it at Shanghai. But once k arrived PVG im glad i went to ask. And was told they dont do luggage transfer and ask me to go to Counter 7. When i go there i saw my luggage just sitting there! Phew. Took it and walk to terminal 2.

An additional note... When it comes to questions about transits/transfers and whether you'll have to re-check your bags or not, the information you get from the airline customer service people before hand is absolutely worthless. United told me three different things about a transfer from a United flight to a Cathay flight in HK, and told me two different things about the PVG transfer. Cathay and Asiana were equally useless. Just be prepared by making yourself have no short transit layovers if changing airlines or transiting a country you've never passed through, and be willing to ask questions rather than assume.

As an aside... If you change airlines after the first hop in a multiple hop trip, sometime you will be asked to "virtually re-check" your luggage. You don't actually have to recheck it, but for example, when I go from Cebu to Incheon and transit from Asiana to United, United calls me to the desk just before boarding and verifies my luggage count and tags on my flight from Incheon to Narita. Oddly, if I take Asiana to Narita, United does not do this same check in Narita.
