So i called the toll free ssn and asked if it was okay to apply for ssn after marriage with the k1 , and they said yes

but then i called my local ssn near by and they said the only way to get change name if if you go to the uscis office and show them your marraige cert , and that when u do this theyll update the i 94 , with the marriage name and then u go back to ssn to get the name change done

but that doesnt make sense because i 94 cant be changed , thats the name a person cant to the US under

so just for my avoidance of issues i think ill just get my fiance her ssn 2 weeks after she arrives then once we get it well marry , get our marriage license and go back to the ssn to change name , then after well apply for AOS

can anyone clarify this for me , just wanted to future proof my plan head of time

Your plan is correct

1. Get a SS# under maiden name (a name, indicated in I-94)

2. After marriage go back to the SS Office with your Marriage Certificate, and get your last name changed on the SS Card.

These cards will have the wording ""valid for work only with DHS authorization". So, when you have your green card in hands, you can go back to SS Office... again and get this restriction removed.

The only issue you may run into is going back to the SSA after marriage but before the EAD or GC are in hand with the married name is that they may not change the name even with a valid marriage certificate. Many clerks at the SSA have no clue as to immigration issues, so unless you absolutely need it changed, I would suggest waiting until you get either of your cards with the new name. They are supposed to change it with a marriage certificate, so if you do go before the cards arrive, and the clerk gives you a problem, ask for a supervisor.
