Hello,

I have couple questions about joint sponsorship, form I-864.

1. How many joint sponsors can I have.

2. Do they have to be from the same household?

3. What are pros and cons of having joint sponsors.

4. What would be the obligations towards them after I AOS or them to me.

1. One joint sponsor; if they are married, you can add the joint sponsor's spouse via I-864A.

2. Yes if you want the second income added.

3. Pro: your visa gets approved when you have enough financial sponsorship. Con: financial obligation of co-sponsor, which cna strain the relationship

4. If your beneficiary gets means tested government benefit, and the petitioner/ main sponsor cannot pay it back, the joint sponsor would be asked to do so. This lasts until the beneficiary becomes a US citizen, has done 10 years of full time work, dies, or leaves the country permanently.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

Penguin, thank you very much for your answer. I've had people telling me that I can have more then one sponsor, the more the better even! So I wanted to make sure if having my mother in law and maybe my father in law as well would be enough. Does it matter if joint sponsor is related to my husband(petitioner) or can it be a friend?

The only way you can have more than one co-sponsor is if there is more than one visa to be issued, for example if a whole family is immigrating.

It doesn't matter whether the co-sponsor is related to you or even will live near you, as long as they are a US citizen or greencard holder living in the USA.
