Retirement is about 10 years off for me, but my wife is starting to talk about it more than I am. Not that I'm not interested, mind you.

The conversations have started with Miami because it's a relatively short one stop flight to her home country. But I've told her in no uncertain terms that she can go ahead and kill me and bury me in Florida if it's her intent to retire there. No offense meant to those who live in and love Fla, but it just isn't my cup-o-tea.

So it'll probably come down to living in Colombia, which has a few cities that I have enjoyed. Living some distance from my mother in law would have some appeal, although my brother in law is a very cool guy so it might not be all bad living in her home city.

Other possible living destinations that might work are Panama and Costa Rica, although the latter has become much more expensive through the years. No direct flights either from CR to COL, as there are from Panama City.

For what it's worth, I learned something the other day. My wife claimed that she came to the US just for me. She never had any real desire to live in the US, and now that she has, she is fine staying here through my working career but then wants to explore our options, big time.

I really liked Medellin when I was there and could see myself living there. We are also about 10 years to retirement (early retirement, yay!) and have talked about both South America and South East Asia. The goal is to receive $10k each month from social security, rental income and 401k to use as our monthly expenses and this will go a long way in the aforementioned continents. We would also like to spend one year in different countries and then just move around until we get tired or find the ideal place to settle down.

10 years can't come soon enough!

I told my fiancee that I would like to retire to the Philippines, but I don't want to live inside Manila. Far too crowded for this guy who spent most of his life in a city of 15,000. I would love to see an American style suburbia in the Philippines with Philippine culture and Philippine costs, but I know that's a pipe dream. I would like to check out Dumaguete some time, but they need to build that international airport. :P

Retirement is 12-13 years away for me and my wife, but we're certainly planning for it. We aren't sure where we want to spend our golden years yet. My having been born & raised in Massachusetts and my wife in Windsor Ont, we both like having the changes of the four seasons and would like to remain in an area that offers that. We also want to be either near or on the water, so we're contemplating a lakefront home in either Maine or New Hampshire.

This is subject to change however because the both of us are disliking the winter time a little more each year. We have also looked at property in Florida, the Carolinas and Kentucky. Kentucky would be ideal for visiting my wife's family in Windsor as it's just a short drive up rte 75 and we're at the Canadian border. We probably won't decide on anything for at least 5 more years, we want to be sure where we want to be first. The biggest priority right now is preparing for retirement financially. I'd hate to get to retirement age and not be able to afford the life we want.

Places like Kentucky will be a real bargain for retirees. I used to live in Dubuque, Iowa, and I don't think it would be the worst place to retire to, especially when you factor in costs. Economic advantages would apply to a lot of places in the Midwest.

We plan to retire in The Philippines. I love it there and I would rather live like a king there than struggle with the cost of living in US.

My husband shocked me last year by agreeing to move to a border town so I can be closer to Canada when I/he retires and be able to travel back even more frequently than I do now.

You better hope you retire as a multi-millionaire?
