Video shows moments before North Miami Police shot unarmed man

A therapist who works with people with disabilities is telling his story after he said police shot him while he was trying to help his patient with autism.

Cellphone video was released Wednesday afternoon showing Charles Kinsey lying on the ground with his hands in the air, telling officers that weapons are not necessary. “When I went to the ground, I went to the ground with my hands up,” Kinsey said, “and I am laying there just like this. Telling them again there is no need for firearms. He is autistic. He has a toy truck in his hand.”

In his hospital bed and wearing bandages, Kinsey said, he was attempting to calm an autistic patient who ran away from a group home. Kinsey could be heard in the video saying, “All he has is a toy truck. A toy truck. I am a behavior therapist at a group home.”

...

The ordeal went on for a few minutes before Kinsey said one of the officers shot him. “I’m like this right here, and when he shot me, it was so surprising,” Kinsey said. “I thought it was a mosquito bite, and when it hit me I had my hands in the air, and I’m thinking I just got shot! And I’m saying, ‘Sir, why did you shoot me?’ and his words to me were, ‘I don’t know.'”

North Miami Police said the incident began, Monday, when someone called 911 and said there was a man walking around with a gun threatening suicide. Kinsey said the man was his patient and the alleged gun was a toy truck. “I was really more worried about him than myself. I was thinking as long as I have my hands up … they’re not going to shoot me. This is what I’m thinking, they’re not going to shoot me. Wow, was I wrong.”

Wow. Looks bad. As always I want to see more, but I don't see anything that could explain this one.

yeah, the cop can't either.

He sneezed? His finger was itchy? He had a seizure? It just went off mysteriously?

I'm sure an excuse will be invented at a later date.

give it a couple days. it took them as much with philandro.

if we run with roygpb's assessment, this is just what happens. we should be okay with it.

In spite of repeatedly viewing the footage available, I cannot see any reason for the police to have shot this man. He was complying, he spoke quite clearly, telling them that he was trying to help the autistic patient in his care. That he was a behavior therapist and that the man sitting in the road had only a toy truck in his hand. I could hear Mr Kinsey instructing the patient sitting in the road to be still, to lie down on his stomach.

I understand the police are jumpy, in light of recent events. I just can't see any reason for this policeman's reaction to this scene, or his actions. Mr Kinsey complied. He wasn't charging at the officer, he wasn't waving a firearm around, he was resisting arrest or anything else. He did precisely as he was instructed to do. The disabled patient couldn't comply, he didn't seem to understand what's going on, given his condition.

I can see a big of wiggle room that may arise from the standpoint of the cop. They usually shoot for the body mass, and not to wound. As Mr Kinsey was shot in the leg, they may make much of this, and claim an accidental discharge. The problem I have with that, is that I can see no clear reason for the policeman to have a drawn gun at all.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Sadly for you none here have defended what appears to be an attempted murder. We don't see race in everything.

As for shooting him in the leg. Bad shot ?

Yeah. How many times do you have to shoot someone to prove it was such a clear mistake?

I guess we can say it was a mistake for the first shot, definitely the equivalent of a burned burger and poor service at a restaurant.

The second shot and obvious mistake must be about the equivalent of drunken pilot doing a roll-over of your plane.

How about that third shot though? Such a clear and tragic mistake and equivalent to short-changing 25 cents.

Cute how you try to twist what I said in another thread. So typical. But always give it your best shot, eh?

However, contrary to your misguided sense of self-righteousness, I happen to think that the officer in this case screwed up. I think even the officer thinks that. More to follow. I will save my indignation for the time when the cop is found guilty but faces no charges. There just seems to be no reason at all for the shooting. Even with the 911 call saying someone had a gun, the situation hardly appears to be escalated at all.

Hey you know they are already trying to spin it. You see he totally didn't mistake-intend to shoot an unarmed and fully compliant black man three times and say he didn't know why... he fully intended to shoot an unarmed autistic man with his scary toy truck three times and missed.

Mistakes man.

as long as we do whatever necessary to steer the conversation away from the police training and tactics while reinforcing the urgent need for police to be armed to the teeth and prepared to save us from autistic monsters with toy trucks and their caretakers..

give it a couple years and folks will be wondering why the autistic man wasn't promptly shot to save tax dollars on this entire charade of 'public safety'. accountability of our public servants dammit.
