Hi everyone,good day.

My fiancee is from Louisiana and I am from the Philippines. We are planning to get married in Las Vegas. Will there be any problem or legal technicalities? Or is it better to get married in Louisiana?

And we only need the marriage certificate for the AOS? I am a little bit confused. Thanks a lot!

Vegas sounds like fun!! I really don't think it matters as long as you attain a valid marriage license that's in the continental US. We are thinking of getting married in HI and I'm from NC. I've heard of many others that have had "destination weddings" and had no issues with their applications.

~~moved from K1 process and procedures to AOS from family based. Topic is about marriage and AOS, not the K1 visa process~~

A vegas wedding is perfectly fine. You generally get your marriage certificate fast.

You need a bit more than just the marriage certificate but you can read up exactly what in the guides. :)

This is what we did, we actually got the ceremony done at the commisioner of marriages office as we didn't see any packages that we liked and spent the money we saved on nicer hotels and dinner at the Luxor.

Here is the office for the marriage license

Here is the office for the ceremony if you want the cheapest option

http://www.clarkcountynv.gov/clerk/services/Pages/CivilMarriages.aspx

You need one witness.

You will need to get the marriage certificate, some places let you take the license and accompanying form to the record office to submit it after the ceremony and get the certificate right away but most won't let you and you have to wait a couple of weeks and the request the marriage certificate here.

We went this route, pretty easy, order the Marriage License online in advance, pick-up the day before the Wedding, then make arrangements at what location you plan to get married at, they always have someone who can witness the marriage. Make double sure to order more than 1 Marriage Certificate, Immigration will require one. We order 3 to be on the safe side.

You don't need to send the original of the marriage certificate just a photo copy and then take the original so to any interview you have to show them. However I did still get three copies as I had to send them back to my country to change things there and it would have taken ages to do each one singularly.

I was a k1 and I had an interview which doesn't happen often but I think it was using a photo of us at someone else's wedding that got their attention, got my green card a little over 3 months after applying as I avoided the dreaded interview waiver letter.

Yes you can apply online for the license before you go to Vegas but this is just doing the form they can't actually send you the license without you physically going there and only would have saved us 15 mins at the license place anyway as there wasn't a queue when we went.

Some packages include a limo to take you to get the license which sounds like it would be fun :-) the package we had been planning on was discontinued just before we booked ours - it was designed for those who can't have anyone but their witness attend. As none of my family could make it due to caring for my grandparents we didn't want to have his family only invited.

Another great thing about having had our wedding in Vegas is now we go back every year for our anniversary :-)

The witness can be anyone, including family members. I would be careful of he people that stand outside the license place and a lot of the chapels who offer to be your witness for a price as I have heard of them refusing to sign at the last minute demanding more money or just not turning up to the ceremony.

Nearly every hotel has a chapel here are a few different links to different kinds, no preference or endorsement just some random googling

Luxor

There are lots of websites with tips on getting married in Vegas :-)

Hey K1_Journey! Thanks a lot for this. Yes, I want the same thing where you have it recorded yourself so it will not sit in the desk for how many days. lol. Thanks really for providing all these specific info. i so appreciate it!

:idea::dancing:

I married my first wife (US Citizen, Las Vegas residents but not required to be resident) in Las Vegas in 1995, we went to the Clark County Marriage License Bureau the day before our wedding (no appointment needed) to get our marriage certificate it took maybe 10 minutes? The next afternoon we had our wedding at Little Church Of The West (appointment required!), which also took maybe 10 minutes lol? The chapel signed the marriage documents on-site and gave them back to us to take to the country records dept. The next day we went back to the Clark County Clerk's Office to register the marriage. Our entire wedding ALL FEES including the chapel fee and reception party at our house was approximately $500. I will warn this, Las Vegas is the wedding capital of the world and often has 50 or 100+ weddings every day, if you go to one of the popular chapels like we did there is a reason it is by appointment only, you are given a 10 minute slot and there is a line of other couples waiting to give their vows, plan ahead for your pictures if you do not buy a plan where they take pictures for you, because once you reach your 10 minute slot time they are quick to rush you out the door so the next couple can give their vows! However, you can spend as much time outside the chapels taking pictures, as we did.

Current Clark County Fe Schedule:

  • Marriage License - To apply for a marriage license $77.00
  • Marriage Certificate or Abstract - Proof of marriage $15.00

How To Get Married In Las Vegas

Marriage License Requirements:

Per Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 122.200, “Any person who shall make a false statement in procuring a marriage license with reference to any matter required by NRS 122.040 and 122.050 to be stated under oath shall be guilty of a gross misdemeanor.” To view the full statute governing marriage in the State of Nevada, go to NRS 122.

Requirements for U.S. citizens and non U.S. citizens are the same, regardless of gender.

To obtain your marriage license, both parties must appear in person before a Clerk at a Clark County Marriage Bureau location.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and no nearer of kin than second cousins or cousins of half-blood, and not having a husband or wife living.

Domestic Partnership questions should be directed to the office of the Secretary of State in Carson City, Nevada at 800-992-0900 or at www.nvsos.gov

Identification to prove your name and age is required. Please be prepared. Per Nevada law, we may issue a marriage license to couples with acceptable identification. Go to acceptable identification for specific information on forms of identification.

Your Marriage License and Certificate will be prepared with your legal name exactly as it appears on the identification presented. It is your responsibility to present the proper identification to have your name reflected as you desire. For example, if you want your Marriage License and Certificate to reflect your full middle name, the identification you present must contain your full middle name - not an initial.

No blood test is required.

A marriage license allows a couple to marry in the state. It is not proof of marriage.

In the State of Nevada, marriage records are public documents.

Whoever performs your marriage ceremony has, by law, ten (10) days to submit documentation to the Clark County Clerk's Office for your marriage to be recorded. Once recorded, you can order a certified marriage certificate online from our website.

A marriage license is issued the same day a couple applies. There is no waiting period to get married after the marriage license has been issued. Marriage licenses are good for one year from date of issue.

All U.S. citizens are required to provide their Social Security number on the Affidavit of Application for a Marriage License. You do not need to present your Social Security card. Those applicants not issued a Social Security number by the United States will enter “none” in the appropriate box.

For non U.S. citizens, some foreign countries require a copy of the marriage license and/or an apostille to register a marriage. It is suggested that non U.S. citizens check with their local officials for special documents needed to ensure their marriage is recognized in their country. Marriage license copies may be ordered online. When the site comes up, select "Get A Copy Of My Marriage License".

Apostilles (Authentication of Signatures) may be required to register and finalize a marriage in a foreign country. Information regarding apostilles can be found under the Licensing Center section on the website of the Nevada Secretary of State.
