Need advice on flying with my fiance once he gets the VISA

Dear VJ members,

Any stories of pros and cons, ups and downs, ins and outs of flying to the country where your fiance is, mine is in Morocco, and flying back with them to the USA?

I'm sure my work won't allow too long of a stay before we return to the US so it won't feel much like a vacation or anything. He's never flown before and it gets crazy in some of the airports and I just don't want him to get overwhelmed and miss a flight or get confused in customs or something. His English is good but even I got confused in some of the bigger airports and I'm a seasoned overseas traveler.

Share your pointers, please!

There are signs he will be fine . Jfk is probulary the hardest cause if you have a connection out of jfk you need to get your bags and recheck them in and then take the airport train to what ever terminal your connecting airline is . Flying to Morocco pretty easy airport is small . Not sure what city your from but a lot of the airlines like airfrance and Iberia have direct flights to other usa cities . As the only direct flight to Morocco is royal air from jfk . Coming back through jfk is always a pain , going there not so much pretty easy .

If he has never flown before, it would be best if you could fly with him, or maybe a family member for his can come along? I know it's tough but he is moving his whole life and first time on a plane, even if the flight is direct and 7 hours it can be terrifying... just my 2 cents

I wish my fiance could have done this for me when we were first meeting. I am absolutely terrified of planes, and had never been in one before. I get overwhelmed in places with large crowds where I have to follow instructions/signs. I was terrified to fly to another country all by myself. I ended up being completely fine though :) My first flight was a 13 hour nonstop flight, and I was okay. I would have really loved if my fiance could be with me though. If you can do that for him or if another family member could go with him, that would probably make him feel more comfortable. If he has to go by himself though, I think he will be fine :)

When my husband came to the US, I flew with him. If it is something you are thinking about then definitely do it, you will have so much peace of mind. Also, not everyone is pulled into secondary-my husband was not.

My tickets were reserved before I even bought a ticket for my husband. We reserved our seats together at the airline office (we were flying emirates and the man who helped us put our seats next to each other)

Asalamu alaykum! Funny you bring it up! My husband is from Egypt and will interview in March; I fully intend to fly to Egypt and travel together to the US for the first time. Like your husband, my husband has never been on an airplane or in an airport. I want to be with him for a few reasons. 1) What an amazing moment to be with him the first time HE experiences flying! 2) I've heard horror stories of spouses waiting HOURS in an airport for their spouse to get through the POE officers; (not guaranteed) but it seems that things would go much smoother if the USC is with the immigrant at POE. Not to mention, my husband's English is not totally up to speed yet and I wouldn't want him to feel total stress and anxiety in transit and on his first day in America. Finally, and somewhat corny I know, but flying into the country for the first time together is kind of symbolic; the start of your new life together. Best of luck to you whatever you decide! Inshallah, everything will go smoothly.

Anyone have suggestions on how the USC can book a two-way flight and end up sitting next to their fiance/spouse who is booked on a one-way flight back with them? Tips, tricks, etc?

I'm wondering the SAME THING!! Perhaps we need a new thread for this though?! Mods - help :]

Simple.

Book a one way flight there, and book another one way flight back to the US for you and your fiancé.

Couldn't hurt, but I thought it was pretty relevant to this thread, honestly, as I figured the OP was probably looking for the same info.

Simple.

Book a one way flight there, and book another one way flight back to the US for you and your fiancé.

One way flights are often more expensive than two-way, hence the desire to avoid that where possible.

Would it not cost more to do it that way? Usually round-trip tickets are cheaper.

Just so you know, JFK is definitely not the only airport where this is the case. Many airport have multiple terminals separated by tram/train systems.
