SSN middle name confusion

Hi everyone,

I entered the US on January 15. Less than a week later, on Jan 21, I went to the SSA office and applied for my social security number. The clerk seemed competent and all was well until she told me that my two middle names were entered as part of my first name, with the middle name field left blank, so for example Margaret Judy Ann as my first name rather than first name: Margaret, Middle Name: Judy Ann.

She said that this was a common issue, but that she couldn't just type in the 3 names as my first name because it was too long. Because of this, she made copies of my documents and said she would need to have my information verified with the DHS. She said this could take 3-4 weeks, but that I didn't have to do anything else except maybe 'fix it with immigration eventually'. Because she didn't make it seem like a big deal, I left it at that. She gave me the paper confirming I applied for a SSN.

The next day I got married and on Monday I filed for AOS/AP/EAD, having typed in 'Judy Ann' in the middle-name field on all the forms, since that is what I've been doing during this entire immigration process, including the K1. Today I decided to search about this issue on VJ and found several posts where people were advised to have their I-94 changed by going to a CBP deferred inspection facility. However, I'm not sure that would work for me since it isn't technically a mistake: all of my Canadian IDs (passport, birth certificate) make no distinction between first and middle names, they are always listed together as 'Given names'. This is also the case on my visa. On my passport, my name is entered in this format: Smith>>Margeret>Judy>Ann.

So... should I do anything about this? Just wait to see if ss card will appear in my mailbox within 4 weeks? Should I bother trying to fix my I-94 even though I have no "proof" that I have a middle name? Since I typed in a middle name on my AOS application, am I correct in assuming that my greencard will have the correct info? Hoping someone else out there will have gone through this and have some insight!

Having your middle and first name together is REALLY common. They need to fix their SAVE db. In my experience the fix is fast but hearing back that it is fixed is slow.

I wouldn't bother fixing your I-94. It's funny because my first green card says my name like this: First Middle Last. My 10 year card however says First M Last. All they did was change the middle name to an initial.

Thanks for your input! I guess I will give it a bit more time and see if I do get the card in the next 3 weeks or not. I'm not in a huge rush to get my ssn, but it would be nice to get it sooner rather than later!

Just as an update for anyone who might run into this issue in the future: I received my social security card in the mail today! Only took about 10 days and my full name is on there (First name, Two Middle Names, Last name). I'm glad it went through quickly!

I am having a similar issue, my wife just received her EAD and SS Card, but the SS card only has first and last name, not the middle name that is shown on her EAD -- is this something we need to fix now?  I now once her AOS is complete and she receives her greencard we will have to update her SS card anyways...
