After passing through regular security checks at Newark Liberty International Airport on her way to a holiday in Istanbul, Kameelah Rasheed was called for further questioning by customs officers.

She was later allowed on the United Airlines flight, but eventually forced to leave the aircraft ahead of take-off to be interrogated by an FBI agent.

The 30-year-old Muslim American told Al Jazeera on Wednesday that the two-and-a-half-hour ordeal a day earlier has left her traumatised and unable to consider flying anymore.

"It was an attempt to humiliate and ostracise me," she said.

"I think this happened because I'm Muslim, because I'm travelling to Istanbul, because they have power with no checks and balances, because security means violating people's rights, because there's a general lack [of understanding of] what safety means, because people don't understand basic geopolitical situations."

Al Jazeera has contacted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates Newark Liberty airport, for comment.

Personally, I think if there was some sort of compensation system for this it would minimize abuses. Nothing massive, perhaps 200 USD plus free accommodation if you are delayed without cause. Then they would be a bit less broad brush about pulling people aside.

Muslims do get profiled here. I'd wager at equal if not more than other minorities. Go back further and you'll see this is nothing new.

Not to mention the mosque that was vandalized about a week ago. Or the fact that Muslims in Irving Tx just had their home addresses put on the internet.

That is why you get pulled off and questioned Marvin . You say you have had a lot of security training .. You should realize this . FBI questioning her .. It was not some dumb TSA agent that pulled her out of line wanting to feel her up. . FBI called it was some serious stuff. .

Oh yeah, the questions were so serious. Some examples:

The customs officers asked her several of the same questions repeatedly, she said, including: "Why are you flying? Where are you going in Istanbul? How can you afford to go on holiday? How much was the ticket price?"

I can see why they were scared of her, those ticket prices were so scary!

They have a right to pull you aside and waste a few hours of your time if it means making sure people are safe. Even if it happened to me, I'd accept it.

Now you know what I really think should be done? All those that get imprisoned for no reason(much worse than just wasting a few hours is wasting 20 years), I think a law should be passed that once and if the mistake is acknowledged and those people are actually released they should receive $1M per each year that they were incarcerated. and I'm not kidding. Maybe then we'll stop putting so many innocent people behind bars.
