Hello all.

I just came back from visiting my girlfriend 3 weeks ago after a 9 day visit. we just found out she's pregnant and is due August 15th, 2016. she's a US citizen and I'm Irish. we already talked about me moving there permanently, now finding out we are going to be having a baby, I'd like to know what would be the quickest visa to apply for, K1 or CR1? I'll be visiting again within the next 3 months. this is all new to me, so any advice would help.

Hi! Personally, I found out I am pregnant in August (due May 2016), and my Costa Rican fiance and I are in K1 Fiance Visa process. I submitted all of the paperwork on September 8 (the day I went to the post office and mailed everything). It is now November 24th, and we are in the final stages of the processes, hoping the have an interview scheduled within the next couple of weeks! It has sucked to be pregnant without him and every day it seems like he is missing something, but we decided that in the big picture, it would be better to be apart for a few months now, and then have the rest of our lives together here in the US with our baby. I would be happy to talk to you more about what the process has been for us. If you decide to go that route, these two links are going to be your starting point references:

Best of luck and congratulations on the baby! :)

PS. If you go the K1 route (which to me seems infinitely faster than the spousal visa) do NOT get married. Once you get married, you lose the opportunity to apply for that visa. :)

K1 is quicker; CR-1 spousal visa is unlikely to get you to the USA in time for the birth, because it takes longer AND you'd need to meet up again to get married before filing. Your other option, if you prefer to use the CR-1, is to simply visit for the birth using the visa waiver.

The advantage to the spousal visa for you, imho, is that you'll be able to find work almost right after immigrating to the USA. With the K1 you will have to wait about 90 days. Having a child is expensive and being able to support your family may be a route you want to choose.
