Date on my green card

Hi everyone, I'm confused about the time I have to wait to apply to citizenship. The first green card I got was issued in October 2007 and it expired in October 2009. My process got a little complicated and I couldn't renew it until 2012. the new green card now has the date: oct 2012- oct 2022.

Some people tell me that I can count the old date to apply for the citizenship, but other people tell me otherwise, that I have to use the new date, Oct 2012. What should I do?

hi

it started since the day you became a LPR, meaning October 2007, it doesn't matter that you had a 2 year GC. you are a LPR

You might need to share a little more about the gap in the dates. Did you lose your status during that time?

I don't think I lost my status. That gap it was the time it took the lawyer to fix the case. My dad sponsored me, after the 2 years of the original greencard he didn't renew it. I didn't know about the process. I kept going to school and getting financial aid with no problem at all. Work was also fine.

you are lucky they didn't put you in removal or deportation

I didn't really read it, it should have counted from the first day but since it expired, I'm not sure if you lost status, it would be best to speak to an attorney because we don't know all the details

You're not really providing much detail about why you didn't have a green card between 2009 and 2012. Were you a minor? Did a parent not remove their conditions? Was there issues? Where you actually still legal? You may want to consult a good immigration attorney about this.

There is an issue here and you need to figure it out before applying for anything.
