Help! SSN or Marriage Certificate first?

Hello!

My fiance arrived on the K1 visa last week. His I-94 is already in the system, and we are going tomorrow to apply for his social security number. In my state (Florida), we will have to wait a 3 day waiting period after applying for a marriage certificate before we are eligible to be married.

My question is, can we apply for the certificate before he knows his SSN number? Can we go with just his passport and the K1 visa?

Thank you!

We did not need a SSN to obtain a marriage license. They looked at his passport for ID and that was it. Every state and county is different though, call and ask your local clerk of the court.

Yes you can :)

Here are the requirements for a marriage license in Pinellas County (I'm basing that on the location listed on your profile)

Requirements to obtain marriage license in the State of Florida:

Both parties must be present when applying for a marriage license, sign the application form and take an oath to the truthfulness of the information provided.

Both parties must provide proof of the following:

  • Age: both parties must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Identification: in the form of a driver's license, state ID, military ID or passport.

  • U.S. citizens must provide their Social Security Number. Non-citizens may provide a Social Security Number or an Alien Registration Number issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Also, a passport is an acceptable form of identification for non-citizens.

  • An application form must be completed. If either party has been previously married, you must note on the application how and when the marriage ended.

The fee for the marriage license is $93.50. This fee is reduced to $61.00 for Florida residents who have completed a premarital preparation course.

Eighteen years in the US and I still don't understand Velveeta, TV ads for prescription drugs, only getting 2 weeks paid vacation, or why anyone believes anything they see on Fox "News".

We had no problems! We had to wait about an hour at the clearwater SSN office, we brought his I-94 and passport and were prepared with the paper saying that K-1 visas are eligible for SSN cards. They told us we should receive the card in 10 business days. Then at the courthouse we had no issues, either, they only wanted to see his passport.
