Docs Required for SSN and I-94

Hello,

Really appreciate any help on this.

I landed in the US as an immigrant (entered through an IR1 visa) and I am still waiting for actual permanent resident card (3 weeks so far) or Green Card. Right now I can use the visa sticker on my passport along with the stamp that I got when I landed in the US (I landed through Toronto Pearson).

I am trying to get my SSN. I went to a social security office with my passport that has the visa sticker and stamp. I was told I need to provide my original birth certificate as well. They also mentioned providing an I-94 form. I tried getting this form on the Dept of Homeland Security's website but the results always show "not found".

I also put a tick mark on getting the SSN on my DS-260.

My questions are:

1. Exactly which documents do I need to bring along if I still do not have the actual green card?

2. If my I-94 form is not available, how do I get it? Do I have to go to Pearson Airport and get CPB to provide one?

3. Instead of my I-94 form, Can I not show the stamp on my passport at the Social security office?

4. how long will it take to get my SSN?

Thank you

I did. I showed my passport with the Immigrant sticker (the visa that's now my temporary green card) and stamp (still waiting on getting the actual card) showing that I am a lawful permanent resident. But they said I needed to show my birth certificate to prove my identity and age. They will not accept anything else its US government issued.

Was it just this particular office that I went to? Someone told me that some social security offices follow different rules.

Sounds like an ill-informed officer.

We only took the passport with the immigrant visa; the officer processed our application and informed us to expect the SS card in the mail.
