Submitted the photo in the wrong DPI !

So this issue is a little bit strange and kinda technical, I guess only a few of you guys may actually answer - especially those familiar with Photoshop.

The problem is the following: I took the photo exactly as required with a DSLR, moved into into my PC, cropped it respecting all the right proportions, measurements and everything, and exported it at the right resolution, right file size etc.

But when I exported it in Photoshop I didn't notice that the DPI (Dots per Inch) of the photo was automatically changed from 300 to 96 in the final file - unfortunately, I've already submitted my entry with this file.

Today I opened the file again in Photoshop, just to double check that everything was correct, and to my horror found out that while the resolution was correct, the actual size measured by the Photoshop rulers was wrong:

instead of being 2 x 2 inches it is now something like 8 x 8 inches - I later found out that this is due to the lower DPI of the photo.

So my question is: does this actually matter? Will this get me disqualified?

I apologize for my frequent threads in this board. It's my first time joining the Diversity Lottery and my questions are all very specific, and couldn't find an answer to them in previous threads.

First of all, if you are submitting digital photo for DV, it should be 600x600 pixel and is irrelevant of the physical dimension. Since u already submitted your application, just hope for the best.

Yeah, it still was 600x600px and with the correct proprtions (eye height, head size etc.), but with a metatag of 96 dpi, causing photoshop to open it as an about 8x8 inches image instead of 2x2 inches image.

It means that I'm good?

I believe the application form would have rejected your photo if it was in an incorrect sizing. In the 4 years that we applied for the Diversity Lottery, the program seemed to reject any photo that wasn't right. Good luck.

i think the system will analyse the metatag and see that the picture isn't the required dpi so it can't give a clear facial analyses, and may be rejected, but i'm not sure about it, and no one know here if the system really check the metatag and the dpp and dpi, maybe it only check the measurement ( 600*600) as i saw someone saying that someone won using a picture of a Dog (no facial analyses = no dpi need), basing on that, you shouldn't worry, maybe it gonna pass the test.

This was my thought too. However there is no way of knowing for sure and if not selected will never know if it was just bad luck or because of photo rejection.

For others reading this who have not yet submitted, please use the photo tool on the DoS website (linked from the photo requirements page) to edit photos so that you can be sure that the specs are right, rather than other programs.

They didn't win using a picture of a dog, they tried it in the old photo validator and it was accepted (the photo validator seems to have been scrapped in favor of the photo tool this year).

There have been reports of applications being rejected at interview stage because of problems with the entry photo not meeting specs, so it's all a bit murky as to exactly how they validate entry photos.

On a more closer look, it seems that the DPI and exact physical size (2x2 inches) requirement is specified only for scanned photos, not digital ones.

Infact the digital photo can be anywhere from 600x600 to 1200x1200 px, thus changing its recognized physical dimension at a standard DPI of 300 when opened in a program such as Photoshop.

I hope this means my entry is good, and the only important dimension is its number of pixels.

If anyone has any certain info about this issue, you're encouraged to add to the topic :)

Digital Photo Requirements:

Image File Format:

JPEG - the image must be in the Joint Photographic Experts Group format.

Image File Size:

240 kilobytes (240 KB) is the maximum image file size.

Image Color Depth:

24 bits per pixel, Image must be in color. [24-bit black and white or 8-bit images will NOT be accepted].

Scanning a Photograph:

Scanner Resolution:

Scanned at a resolution of at least 300 dots per inch (dpi).

Image File Format:

The image must be in the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)format.

Image File Size:

The maximum image file size is 240 kilobytes (240 KB).
