USAA secured credit card

I came on a K1, married, have filed for AOS and currently just waiting on an interview. I have received my EAD/AP combo card and went to apply for a secured credit card from USAA to start building my credit. They told me they cannot complete an application without a green card; anyone else run into this? Other banks do not require permanent residency and I'm wondering if the person on the phone was wrong or is it just USAA? Seems strange seeing as how the military has a large number of foreign spouses... not all of us have our green card in hand... Thoughts anyone? Thanks!

I added my wife as co-owner or liable to my USAA credit card account to help build her credit make sure she has access to credit if need be and they did not require her green card. But they are now telling me that in order to add her as co-owner of our checking and savings accounts they want us to fill out some IRS forms on her, and send in some additional information I am thinking of just getting a second atm card for her. Or transferring our cash to another bank we use and are not requiring those forms. my only thing I just want her to have equal access to all of our accounts she brought as much to our marriage as I did.

you may consider a different bank.

I've had the same response from them.. They allowed me a profile but nothing more... My husband has to call in to get me on his account or go in person with proof...

Was no problem getting my nonresident spouse added to my USAA account and debit card. Just provided copies of all the documents they requested. Passport, drivers license, ITIN, W8-Ben. Same requirements required by NFCU and my local bank.

Thanks for the replies! I am already added to all my husband's accounts, I just wanted to apply for my own credit card, independent of him, for credit building reasons. They said they needed a green card to proceed. No big deal, I will wait until I get mine!

We're USAA members too and needed to file a W-8BEN form as well as provide copies of my nonresident alien spouse's passport, ID, etc. before signing a new signature card to add him to my checking and savings accounts. However...we're waiting until he gets his own SSN to apply for his separate credit cards. It should only be a few more months and then MY life will be so much easier administratively lol. I'm so sick of explaining that my husband isn't a US citizen.

I understand the rules USAA has and they are following the rules of the USG. but why they required certain documents and my other banks did not is what I do not understand.

As far as credit scores go, if the US citizen spouse adds the sponsored spouse to their credit card account the credit card holder automatically reports or both to the credit agencies at least that is what we were told by all of our credit card holders.

My husband has car insurance with USAA and recently he opened a savings account with me and we had to select one of the two options - does the person you're trying to add have a US passport or a permanent residency card? We couldn't proceed as I have neither. So he just opened the account, we decided we wouldn't get an ATM (the only way to save lol) for it and once I get a GC he'll add me. Until then, I have his login info but that's it.

USAA, NFCU, and my other bank all required the same documents to add her to the accounts. USAA and NFCU have already given her, her own account numbers to open her own accounts. She is still non-resident.

Thanks guys. I am already added to all his accounts, filled out the W8Ben, have an ATM card, all that is good. I just wanted to apply for my own credit card, without his name on it and USAA says I cannot proceed without a permanent resident card. I applied through Capital One and they did not ask for a permanent resident card. I just it's just a USAA thing!

May I offer a suggestion; forget USAA. Go for a Military Star card.

My wife an I went to the BX to apply. She never had to produce her green card. She needed only her SSN and monthly income (she is unemployed, so she used mine); instant approval, and we were in and out in about ten minutes.

I am the USC.

The member "Khaleesi" is my beautiful wife.

Great idea, thank you! I gave up on USAA and their crazy rules, Capital One had no problem giving me a credit card.
