doctor refuses to write a little

Hi

As I've written on a previous forum, I have previously suffered from depression and anxiety. Even though I have not been on medication for sometime my doctor refuses to write a letter stating I am not a harm to myself or others. He says he has been advised not to do this for immigration purposes any longer as this has brought on law suits to practices in the past. Has anyone been in this situation before? Do you think a copy of my medical history will be enough? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would ask to see another doctor. Some will do things and some won't.

I saw a doctor about this recently ( I had one bout of anxiety after a divorce 11-12 years ago) he was only too happy to write a letter for me and those magic words I present no harm to myself or others and it was an isolated case many years ago. No medication taken. I suppose some will and some won't, it's their individual choice. Maybe get your medical history and ask a private doctor.

Interesting, would have thought I would have come across such cases, any links?

They could send you for their own psych evaluation, letter or not, so as long as you're not any harm to yourself or others, this isn't really going to be an issue. Don't stress it.

In terms of your Doctor, however... sounds fishy. I mean, I've never seen such a thing nor do I recall seeing any immigration cases like this in the news (which would certainly come up on here sooner or later). Sounds to me like he just can't be bothered.

This info bears repeating for about the third time this week if you missed it elsewhere. Might be useful.

Depression Knightsbridge

Sunya and Tim

<p>My fiance indicated he had battled some depression 3 years ago while going thru the separation from his wife. He took with him a letter from his doctor but Knightsbridge asked for this additional information. Just thought I would share so that you know all they will be asking. Hope this helps. He was given a form by the doctor and asked to have his doctor provide the following information.

Please provide a brief medical report outlining:

  • Diagnosis
  • Investigations - if any
  • Treatment
  • Duration of treatments and illness
  • Any prior or subsequent mental health illness
  • Any incidents of self-harm, harm to others or suicidal attempts
  • Prognosis and your opinion of current mental state

Thanks for the replies. This has me stressing out big time. I have never self harmed or been a threat to others so do not understand why he just can't write the letter. He stated that he does write immigration related letters for Canada but not the US as he has been advised there are many lawsuits coming from the states.

I therefore got in touch with a couple of private practices to see if they could help but they will not as I haven't been an ongoing patient of theirs.

My only hope is that Knightsbridge will send me for a physc evaluation and not reject me just because of this. I'm considering changing my practice but don't know if its going to help as I will only have been a patient for a month or 2 before needing this letter.

You will not be denied a visa over this. Lots worse situations have gotten them. Print out what Sunya wrote and ask him if he would write a report in response to those questions. Not all of it is making a judgement. He can answer at least that you in the past have not harmed or attempted suicide. He can say he refuses to speculate on your future behavior for fear of lawsuit. Then Knightsbridge will have to make the call, which is what they are trying to put off on your GP because they don't know you at all. Or they can ask a psychiatrist to evaluate you.
