I am a Licensed Chemist from the Philippines. I have plan to work in the US, but I will have my visa from my husband who is a US citizen. Will the companies in US honor my diploma as Chemist if I applied for a Chemist position. Thank you.

Yanks call them Pharmacists.

Look at the State requirements for where you are moving to.

I am sure there will be a lot to be done to get qualified in the US.

But I am not a Pharmacist. I am a Chemist just like Chemical Engineer except that I work more inside the Laboratory, usually in the research and development of products or testing of quality of the products in Manufacturing industries. Thanks.

You may want to use a credential evaluation service. More info here: http://www.nafsa.org/findresources/Default.aspx?id=8817

However, the possession of a certified diploma won't get you a job. You need good references in the US and some US work experience. A US education helps too.

In this instance, "good references" means influential or known individuals in the U.S. who can speak positively of you in a way that improves your chances of being hired for positions that you're interested in.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

That our medium of instruction is English (I am Filipino too.) doesn't matter. They will evaluate how you communicate during an interview.

You asked the forum if US employers will consider a Philippine diploma. Yes they will. But your resume, your interview, US references ( thanks Tbone for explaining this), and US experience weigh more than a diploma. They verify your academic credentials late in the hiring stage, when they've got an idea that they want you on their team. At that point, they may ask you to use a credentials evaluating service, or they may not. If you have a solid work history with a huge international company they may not bother with the verification service.

I understand that. But our courses medium of instruction is English.what do you mean by Good references?

Well I guess this is everywhere anyways. It's nowhere different with the Philippines situation when it comes to professionals. That US reference is ridiculous. :( If you're a hardworking person trying your luck on your own but know no one from that place is definitely non sense. :( Thanks to everybody though.

Actually, references are also part of the Philippine hiring process. Prospective employers interview your former supervisors or former colleagues. It's a valuable tool when hiring someone. If you're not familiar with this, it sounds like you haven't been in the workforce very long.

As for your job prospects in the US, this means that you'll have to take any job that you can get once you arrive here. Then you can use your boss or colleagues as references. If you do a bit of volunteer work, your coordinator can act as a reference. If you have a colleague in the Philippines who know works in the US, that could work too.

Of course you can also try your luck listing Philippine references in your resume. Except, in my experience it's hard getting a hold of folks in the Philippines on their office phones, even when you've agreed on a telecon appointment. Sound quality on mobile phones is iffy. Plus, English speaking skills vary.

Good luck and try to keep a positive attitude!
