Need to retrieve passport from US embassy

Hi all,

I applied to renew my F-1 visa, but at my appointment the lady said my application needed further processing, and then told me I needed a full medical exam. Because this could take a few weeks and that my semester in the US has already started (my application for an accelerated visa was refused, in spite of the fact that it was a matter of my job starting), I've been advised by my university to wait out the semester here (in Europe).

I'm french, but the only place I have a roof is in England, so I need my passport (which the embassy kept to make the visa).

My question: how do I get the embassy to send me my passport? Can I just go to the embassy in Paris without an appointment to get it back?

Thank you very much!

Update: apparently I don't need a passport to travel to England. I could just go with my ID.

The question then becomes: if I contact the embassy to get my passport back, will it cancel my current visa application?

If I don't, how long until this current application "expires"? Will I get in trouble for not going through with it right away?

If you do go to England without your passport, only using your ID make sure you will be able to get back into France with only your ID so you can get your passport. And also double check the info about only needing ID to go to England, I'm not sure that's accurate. My British friend said she could fly with just her ID to Greece but she would not be able to go back to England without passport.
