Yes, I agree Janelle, he did. I thank him every time I get handed a plastic knife on the dinner tray. Every time they turn my luggage inside out.

I was flying on 9/11. From NZ to SFO. Without telling the passengers, they did a very slow and quiet U turn, and we ended up back in Auckland. I flew out again on 9/16. Going up wasn't that different, but by the time I came back a month later, it was a security nightmare. It has only gotten worse in the years since.

Osama won? Last time I flew to the States was before 9/11 and the VWP rules were just the same, if you lied on your application and get found out then you go home. Simples.

For PhD candidates, they seem fairly stuck-up and stupid. Ignorance of the laws is not a defense. Additionally, USCIS is not set up to offer accommodations based on naivety. It is simple, whenever you enter another country you have to learn and follow their laws, and don't expect to be coddled by broom pushers that are doing their job. People get turned around at the border all the time. Deal with it!
