OMG, what was he thinking? It says everywhere to present the package to the officer on the border....

I think he needs to give it to the CBP officer on the border to be allowed in. I mean they kick up a fuss if the package is even a little torn/opened when presented to CBP, so to not even have the package with him..... I guess if you're lucky, they'll escort him down to the luggage area so he can retrieve his bag and the package and then bring him up for secondary screening. Hope it works out for you.

how? They won't let me take it. And he would be here in NY at the point of entry

How was the luggage shipped? With cargo or it arrived on an earlier flight?

Are you sure they won't let you pick up the bag? When I moved back from London, I pre-shipped some boxes and my parents were able to pick them up at the cargo area. All they needed was my full name and the shipment number and it was fine.

If the bag just came with an earlier flight, it will most likely be held by the airline and then, all you need is the luggage tag number and they usually let you pick up the bag. They don't check the name against the luggage, or at least that's been my experience.

At least if you have the package in your hand and is waiting outside the arrival area, your husband can explain that to the CBP officer and hopefully one of them can just come out and pick up the package.

I am unclear, is the envelope in his checked luggage that will hopefully be on his flight, or was it shipped separately? If it is in his checked luggage, I would have him explain this when he goes through immigration at the POE, and hopefully they will take him to a supervisor to retrieve his bag at the customs carousel. Assuming no damage to the envelope, he should be ok depending on the officials. If it is part of a separate shipment, maybe you can retrieve it then go to the arrivals area, he then needs to explain that you have the envelope, and hopefully they will find you.

Worse case, he is denied entry and everything goes back to his home country and he gets the envelope and books another flight keeping the envelope with him. Could be expensive.

Good Luck!

It is his checked baggage. But he checked in a day before through the airport hotel where he stayed the night at. So I'm not sure if they ship it before his flight or it gets on the plane he's taking.

So he's on a connecting flight and has checked in his luggage to his final destination? In that case, his suitcase is at the airport and will arrive with him on the same flight. If he hasn't boarded his final flight to the US yet, have him go to the check-in desk at the airport and tell them that he MUST retrieve his luggage. He just gives the little stub from the luggage tag that he was given when he checked in his bag, then the airline can retrieve the bag for him, he can take out his visa packet and then check in his bag again.

This will only happen though if it's at least an hour or so till boarding, so everyone's suitcases haven't already been loaded onto the plane.

He needs to speak to someone at the airport, hopefully the bag has not been loaded yet.

As a matter of security, one's bags will not travel without them. One will not have their bags sent ahead of them. Israel takes flight security very seriously so his bags should still be at the airport.

Good luck

He's been trying for 3 hours. All they've been telling him is to wait. His flight is in 30 mins now. Fingers crossed please pray for us that they'll bring him his luggage as they said.

If his flight is in 30 minutes and they haven't retrieved his bag yet, I don't think it'll happen. :( His best bet now is probably to explain it all to the CBP officer at the border and have them escort him down to the luggage area to retrieve his bag and the packet once in the US. I think I've read about someone else doing this same thing in one of the POE reviews here on VJ. And that time, the CBP officer escorted that person down to get the luggage with the packet inside. Should've been at Dulles or Newark, cause those are the two POEs I've been reading reviews for.

Hope it works out for you.
