what i basically did is i signed up for a short term insurance with a high deductible so its pretty cheap. its only good for a maximum of 6 months and obviously hopefully nothing happens because im sure it would be a hassle to figure it out with them, but it covers until the next enrollment period and then you can just get on the normal insurance plans.

as far as my information goes from today - you can apply for medicaid (not medicare!! thats where i get confused with dave here ) after 5 years of being a permanent resident.

the marketplace you can use immediately which gets you the discounts from the affordable care act. i think. and hope

obviously you have to meet the requirements for obamacare to receive the benefits.

still not sure what boiler is trying to tell me.

Jakeblades, if you don't mind me asking, what insurance company did you go with for the short term insurance?

You are not required to have coverage until you are a legal resident. At that time regardless of what time of the year it is you have 60 days I believe to get coverage through Obamacare. Until you have your green card you can't use Obamacare. You can get private insurance I would imagine, but haven't tried so not sure.

Not before you get your green card. They seem to have a k1 loop hole. You have to have a green card to apply for Obamacare... Makes you wonder what all the illegal people are doing, same as before getting free health care. What a nifty system.

That is absolutely incorrect. You do not, in any way shape or form, require a Green Card, to use the federal exchange. The law and even the website is extremely clear on this.

I spelled it out on page 1 that you can submit documents for Obamacare before you receive a GC.

i am paying 51$ a month with a 2500 deductible and 20:80 coinsurance for the next 5000$. so a 3500$ deductible if you will.

the insurance company we went through is called "hcc life" and i can be with them for up to 6 months and then i would have to renew my contract. they only cover issues occuring after you signed up with them so i would assume it would be a hassle if you were to actually claim something with them but i only have it to cover my ### through real emergencies.

really interesting to find out about all these special circumstances as far as obamacare and health insurance goes though. i invested quite some time on research but there is plenty of new stuff to be found out here. im pretty stoked on the community support thanks everybody!

Here is what the law says. Notice on the top part it mentions being an LPR/GC holder... but if you look below they also accept lawful temporary residents and even those that have filed to adjust status to become an LPR. If you have filed to adjust your status then you can get coverage. It even mentions the various documents you can use to prove this. Those who have filed paperwork to adjust status will have many of the following: I797, I94/I551, EAD, passport etc. I've copy and pasted it below.
