That's a good debate. I'm not the guy to have it. But you should sit down with someone well versed in the Bible and hash it out.

Yer right ! Add 2 kegs o beer, 11 other fellas, and you suddenly have a Methodist Mens Group Weekend SmashUp. Stellar !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Again, when specifically addressing homosexuality, the punishment is death. Unless we're ready to choose which of gods word needs to be phased out. That would be interesting to watch.

Jesus said love your neighbor and love your enemies. Forgive all who wrong you and don't judge. Anyone who digs out the death bits are using it to fit their agenda of hate. That is not what Jesus taught. If you are a Christian, you are supposed to follow his teachings.

Cool, so let's throw away the Old Testament.

Jesus fulfilled what was in the Old Testament. He took all those punishments upon himself. His teachings superceed the old.

In my opinion, you've pretty much nailed it. For me, I tend to focus on what Jesus says, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." If you pay attention to Jesus, you're not going to go wrong.

As you said, people focusing on the death bits are just trying to reinforce their own agenda of hate. Either a hatred of gays, etc. or sometimes their hatred of religion. I guess Old Testament hate is a lot more fun than New Testament love.

He made it simple, yet as humans, it is hard to do. Love is much better than hate. Forgiving accomplishes more than holding a grudge.

Choosing to forgive someone who betrayed me and broke my heart was probably the most liberating and powerful choice I ever made in my life. I chose to love and find peace, and I try to live my life that way wherever possible.

I say probably the most, because burning my bra and letting my armpit hair grow might have been more liberating and powerful.

Yo should have burnt your bra!

Forgiving someone can be liberating, but so can giving someone a slap in the face.

Where I live it is always about keeping the harmony, sacrificing one's selfish desires for a stable society. Well quite frankly I find going to kick ### NY and London wonderfully refreshing at times. (Going in 10days)!

But not for the Jews right? The old testament still applies to them, they were not absolved..

And I still don't get how washing away past sin allows for ignoring gods words going forward? The old testament says gays should be put to death - it says it directly.. Either being gay is a sin or it is not, how can the same god tell Jews that being gay is a sin and they should be put to death but then tell christians it is not? That makes no sense. It is a sin or it is not..

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

The Old Testament also says if you wear two types of clothing you should be put to death, or work on the Sabbath, or mix your foods. What makes homosexuality more prevalent than those other rules?

Personally, I live my life by treating others the way they want to be treated. That's how I practice my faith, I don't judge others who partake in things they want to do, that's their life, not mine.

But the death bits are there..

In Syria today there is a weekly gathering at a tall building where they throw people off the top floor (the punishment for being gay) while people at the bottom shout "God is great!" as each body smashes into the pavement. I don't care if the rest of the week they practice peace and humanitarian acts, my problem is with that weekly gathering.

These people can point to the words of god with just as much validity as you can point to the peaceful bits for these actions. That is why I have a problem with religion (or at least these books). We can teach peace but any radical can also get meaning and justification for their actions.

I am not defending the old testament, I am pulling one example of the hypocrisy that is related to the topic (the heterosexual pride parade).. You pulled two more examples.. I agree there is a mountain of hypocrisy.

So why are you a believer? I agree with philosophy of how you choose to live your personal life - but If you are going to ignore the parts of your religion you don't like and live by the basic golden rule (treat others as you wish to be treated) what is the point?

I believe in God and the Devil, but I don't think it's up to me to mete out punishments on others. It's what I do that important, and how I set the example for others to follow.

Those laws I believe, it was up to the court to hand down those sentences. But in the grand scheme of things, I don't think on Judgement day, me wearing two different sets of cloth will earn me eternal damnation, that's just my opinion.
