I am pretty sure you can but you may want to check the actual checklist of documents for that particular embassy as I know they are not all the same. For the embassy in Montreal, copies of tax returns, check stubs, or letter from employer can be used.

I sent a copy of the tax return and the tax transcripts. The Kabul site says something about, "tax statements certified by the IRS" in the FAQ's. I don't know what that means, despite working for the IRS for several years, so I played it safe and just sent the transcripts to be safe.
