Birth Certificate Original or copy?

17 posts in this topic

Recommended Posts

I have my interview in montreal but I was born in Israel.

I still have my birth certificate but it seems like its a copy. Do I need to get the actual original document or can it be a certified/notarized copy? Do embassies usually give certificates on the spot without waiting?

Thanks

Ok I found my Birth Certificate from over 20 years ago, theres a Notary stamp on it and it says "we certify that the above is an accurate translation of the original"

I should be good right?

To get the original it would take 2-3 months wait...

ok - maybe yer freaking out over verbiage?

for a birth certificate shown on interview day,

it must be (pick one):

1. original or

2. certified copy, certified by the issuing authority, showing stamp, or chop or seal .

I think you have #2, based on what you've written. #1 is exceptionally dangerous to 'give over', as there is only 1 original, ever.

USUALLY people give #2 plus a regular photocopy, asking the Vice-Consul to review the certified copy and take the photocopy. USUALLY.

Ok that makes sense, thank you.

I have a separate question if you can answer it?

Im trying to obtain a police certificate and they are telling me it can take 2-6 weeks, should I schedule my visa interview anyway while I wait to receive that document?

I really dont want to waste any time

Where are you getting the police certificate from? In Canada you don't need fingerprints if you've never been convicted of a crime FYI. But if you're obtaining it from another country get it ASAP. I wouldn't schedule the interview until you know you have it.

In canada. I called up the local police station and they said it can take up to 2 - 6 weeks

"A Police Criminal Records Check (PCRC) is a search of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) databases and is usually required for bylaw licences, employment or immigration purposes."

A PCRC will provide the following information:

  • Criminal convictions summary or indictable from CPIC and/or local databases
  • Findings of guilt under the Youth Criminal Justice Act within the applicable disclosure period

Try the commissionaires or the RCMP instead. I went into an RCMP office and walked out with my name check police certificate 20 mins later.

You only need the CPIC name check if you've never been convicted of a crime.

EDIT:

Ive been charged in the past but the charges were dropped, my finger prints are still in the system though. Am I going to have to wait longer?

charged and convicted are two different things.

You just need the name check of no conviction.

alright thank you, I just found a local place that does it the same day, for some reason the police station takes up to 6 weeks.

I hope I am ok because my fingerprints and the dropped charge might show up on it

UPDATE TO THIS THREAD:

I had my interview yesterday in Montreal and they did not accept my notarized copy of the birth certificate which is unfortunate because now the process will be delayed months until I can get the original from the Israeli consulate.

They said I have to mail the original certificate and my passport to the US consulate and they will issue the visa, I have to do this within one year.

really annoyed about this
