The above post was made in the UK forum several years ago, but I'm curious to see more replies.

How/why did you two decide who would move?

For us, it wasn't that difficult. I have a good-paying job, and live near family. He had an ok-paying job and lived in Ireland (originally from South Africa, so not near family) and was looking to relocate sometime down the line anyway when we met. We both have minor children, but he has sole legal custody of his son, and my custody of my daughter is shared, legally. Plus, my daughter is a teenager, so we figured his 10 year old would relocate easier. We have tentative plans to relocate possibly back to Europe once he has his citizenship. But life's plans are up in the air until then.

For us it was almost a no brainer

He has a stable job and a good salary, but only speaks English.

I live in Québec, so french is almost required. I know the town where I lived was francophone.

On the other hand, I had a basic job, but speak English and French. So it would be easier for me to get used to a new life because I am fluent in English.

He first moved to me in Ireland, because it was quicker, and I had the better paying job.

But he always had difficulty with liberal Ireland, and once we had kids, we wanted to be near family (I've no siblings, and my mother lives in Switzerland). So we moved to Arkansas, where he has siblings.

Original plans were for him to move to Canada because he was unemployed. However he'd lose any VA benefits beyond them paying for schooling. He landed his job he has now, which is working for the FAA. So I moved down because we'd have greater stability and he had better paying job. (I work in retail, which I can do anywhere.) Had his job not come along when it did, he'd be going to school in Alberta vs us living in CO.

You can leave the military. Granted you may have a contract for XX number of years but they can also let you out of said contract and have for many military members. You chose not to do so and your wife supported you. YAY, it was a happy choice!

For us it was because I have 2 children and a home and car and lots of family in the same city that I'm extremely close to. He just has an appartment and his mom and sister. So it made sense, especially since the 3 of us only know english, but he already knows multiple languages and so it isn't hard to transition.

Though I definitely have considered moving over there a few times, it doesn't make much sense for a lot of reasons. Including the fact their immigration is just as difficult as our, if not even a little more so, especially since we'd immigrate 2 children as well.

I moved to Denmark originally after much going back and forth, my husband had enough with my indecision and went for Denmark. Honestly had we waited a couple of years for me to be there as a spouse versus on my EU rights, the two choices would have been equivalent. As it was, my daughter didn't take kindly to Denmark, especially the immigrant children she went to school with, and was kind of in the middle of a mental breakdown... which is scary for a 4 year old. I just couldn't get used to the roughness of the people and the gloomy weather especially without a car. So, we moved to America and we all like it here.

I already spoke English so it made more sense for me to be the one to move. My husband would have had to learn a completely different language, plus the immigration laws are sort of strict and I wasn't even old enough to be allowed to bring someone into the country at the time.

I grew up in Denmark so I have to admit that I absolutely love the dark, gloomy weather. My husband is always looking forward to going to Denmark for the exact same reason.

For us, it was an easy answer. My ex-husband was never going to let my three daughters move to Egypt. While neither of us really wanted to live in the Untied States due to the discrimination but there wasn't much of a choice, the girls come first.

We first lived in Germany, but my wife never really picked up on German (it's hard to learn!). I'm fluent in German and English and having lived in the USA before, I knew I liked it and could easily adapt to the lifestyle there. Plus my wife is really close to her parents, who are already in their 70's and need help every once in while. My family lives in Belgium, so I don't see them very often to begin with and I'm not very close to the family I have in Germany. I've worked in the restaurant business for 15 years, so it's easy for me to find a job once I receive my EAD. So it was really a no brainer for me to relocate to the United States to have a happier life with my wife
