The SSN card that I received when I was working on an F1 visa says: "Valid for work only with DHS authorization."

Do I contact SSA once I receive the EAD or do I contact them after getting GC?

either is acceptable,

as long as

'contact them' = 'walk in to an office'.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Your EAD is your "authorization". If you wish, once your green card is approved you can go back and apply for a new social security card and have the wording removed, but you do not have to do so. The only time you must go and have the wording removed is after you become a US citizen.
