Traditional marriage in Nigeria

Hello everyone,

I have a question and would be happy if there is anyone that can give insight to this. My husband was married to a lady in Nigeria who passed away and this was a traditional marriage and in the eyes of the law this type of marriage isn't recognized. We just had our AOS interview and the officer said he should prove that the marriage was legally terminated. We have contacted Nigeria and the marriage registry said since there is no marriage certificate they wouldn't be able to provide any document to stating that he is free to get married else where.

What can we do in this case? He is no longer in contact with the relatives of the deceased wife and can't get the death certificate.

Thank you in advance

Why can't he get a death cert? In most countries, these are a matter of public record.

The death certificate would prove a marriage termination correct? Why need a divorce decree?

good luck

OP, your salvation is in Nigeria.

Your Husband needs to put down his US hat and wear the Nigerian one and get busy. It's hard to think things through when you are sitting here in the US. He needs to go and make peace with the ex In Laws (gifts and money will smooth the way) and get a death certificate.

Good luck.

PS: My advice to folks is to always tie up all loose ends.

You mentioned you contacted the Nigerian authorities and they told you since there is no marriage records non exists. Write them a letter and request information and response back in writing. Get them to put this information in writing on an official letter head and that's your proof right there!
