Visa Packet has a tear in it

Hey we recieved our K-1 visa today and the brown envelope. The seal is still intact and we didn't open the envelope. However there is a tear on one side of it, not a very big one and not big enough to take papers out of. We sent a picture of it to our lawyer and she said it looked ok but I don't want any problems at port of entry. According to our embassy website we can visit between 10 and 12:30 monday-friday to get it resealed. It would cost us an extra trip there but I don't want to risk the postal service again. Do you think this envelope is a problem or is it ok?

How long will that take? Will they give us any issues? Can we get it the same day? Do we need to make an appointment? I tried calling the embassy and the only person I talked to was an operator who connected me to an automated message before I could even finish my question.

The website says:

  • I OPENED MY VISA PACKET. WHAT SHOULD I DO?Please bring your visa packet and passport (with the visa in it) back to our office between 10:30AM and 12:00, Monday through Friday, or send it to the Consular Section by Turkish Postal System (PTT) (click on CSC link at usvisa-info.com and follow the flow of the web page).

Even though ours arrived in this condition, I guess this question applies to us too.

Search for similar stories on VJ, and you'll find that it has almost never been a problem. It is pretty clear in that photo that you did not try to open the envelope. I think you should be OK.

With that big of a tear I would get it re-sealed at the embassy.

Will they give us problems? How long will this take? I don't have time to sit around waiting for this.

Why would they give you problems? This happens a lot, for some reason they have chosen to put super important documents in the most fragile envelope possible. I do not know how long it will take. If you do it as soon as possible there will be less time to sit and wait around :)

I don't want them to think we tried to open it or something. The Ankara website just tells us to show up but I am wondering if we need an appointment. I tried calling but I got the useless operator.

We will probably go first thing on Monday. We have to get another dang plane ticket just for this. I heard there may be a fee. It is such a dang hassle to go there but we have friends in Ankara so we will go visit them too. Our lawyer thinks it shouldn't be a problem though

It happens all the time because the envelope is so fragile it tears during transportation. Have you tried emailing them? Don't know about Ankara, but the embassy in Stockholm seem to prefer it when you email them. They're pretty quick to reply. Don't have any experience with Ankara though.

You can be lucky and meet an understanding CBP officer at POE or you will meet someone who will not be as understanding. It all depends on the officer and your lawyer can't be sure how the CBP officer will react.

Search the forum if you want and see how it has been for others, I know some were allowed to tape it up themselves but if you really want to be on the safe side I would recommend just getting it re-sealed. But it's up to you.

If you live in or near Ankara and can afford to take the time to do it, go do it. If you're far from there and/or can't take the time off to do it, then don't. Just my 2 cents. We all evaluate risk differently, as this thread makes clear ;). I doubt anyone on VJ will give you an answer that makes you 100% comfortable in whichever decision you make.

The tear isn't terribly large, but it is not exactly small either. Looks like you could get some fingers in there and tamper with the papers. That would personally make me want to take it back to get it resealed. If you can contact them first and ask for their opinion first before heading over to the consulate again, that would be your best option.

How do I contact them? Calling them is useless and I don't want to wait for an email. The embassy website just tells us to show up. I better get this fixed within a few minutes because we are about to buy plane tickets
