I just got my interview date and as I know I won't pass the interview (due to medical reasons) I want to know if they will return my passport while they evaluate my case?

I intend to visit my wife immediately following the interview.

You can ask them for it back because you have travel plans, but it might not matter. If they find you medically unqualified for the visa, that is entered into the system as an ineligibility. It is highly unlikely that you will then be admitted into the US under ESTA or a visitor visa. If you are ineligible for entry, it applies to all categories of entry.

You can ask for it back yes. You aren't failing your interview, you're dealing with waivers.

No it's a vaccine waiver (and will take them a few months to process). Which isn't required for visitors.

True -- but the immigration officer at the port of entry could always factor that into a decision whether to admit you into the US or not. You are, clearly, an intending immigrant at the end of the process who just got denied the visa. It could appear to the officer that you are using the visit entry as the means to get into the US and you have no plans to leave. I'm certainly not saying that's your intent -- just think you need to be prepared for the immigration officer to think that.
