That isn't true either. All that is required to change your name from single to married is a marriage certificate, so all that should be required to apply for you SS card in your married name is your I-94, passport and.... a marriage certificate. Hmm, that is how my wife did it, two days after we were married.

Thank you, Hank! So should I just apply for SSN after we get married?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

If you can possibly get your SS card "before" you are married. Me and my wife waited until after, and it took 5 trips to the SS office to get her card, because her new married name was not in the data base, her "maiden" name was in the data base. Then we had to wait until she got her EAD/AP card, and then had to get a person from another office to come in and get this mess straightened out.

If you possibly can go back, and explain what I have told you here. If you wait until after married, you have a lot of grief coming your way!

some dissection -

'Maiden Name' = VISA name, the name printed in the visa, the name stored in the SAVE database.

A SSA clerk makes a look up in the SAVE database by Alien Registration Number and VISA name. The name got into the SAVE database because of the POE event. For K-1 visa holders, the name exists there because of that electronic I-94 record.

Sometimes things don't match - VISA Name mis-spelled, A# typo, as stored in SAVE - but a supervisor can over ride that at the SSA office.

To apply in 'married name' is the kiss of death for a K-1 visa holder, prior to the 74th day past POE, as a properly trained SSA clerk will send out the file for DHS verification, and that takes 2 to 3 months. During that verification period, the window to apply expires, and now one has to wait until the EAD shows up with the 'new married name'.

It's a hassle. Those that got it done in married name and actually got a card within 2 weeks are the anomoly, as it's not supposed to happen at all.

[this not apply to CR-1/IR-1 visa holders]

Sure, Hank_ got it done, but he was lucky, an anomoly.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

i applied for ssn yesterday.. I had my passport, 1-94..marriage certificate but The guy told us that I cannot use my married name on it. :wow: He said I have to wait for the greencard and then I can change my name.. however, my friend from kentucky was able to use her married name on her ssn. thought it would be the same case with me. :( why are they doing thissss....not being fair to everyone... :protest:

There are way too many working at SSA that don't have a clue what the requirements are so they use their opinion or the opinion of the person sitting next to them, never bothering to get the facts.

I some times wonder if the test to work at SSA is printed on the back page of a comic book.

so, did you apply in yer visa name, or no ? if yes, go back to the office today, they will either:

1. give you the ss number (not the card) or

2. tell you of new problems.
