Self employed - current years income

Hi,

I have IRS transcripts for the past 3 years.

Just wondering what is the best way to show the current years income.

Would I just take my income from January to present, and divide by 5, and multiply by 12?

Any help appreciated.

We added the amount from the paystubs from the last 6 months and divided by 6 and multiplied by 12. However, we are not approved yet so I can't say for sure that's the right way to do it. The reason why we took 6 paystubs is because somewhere on the NVC website they mention 6.

Being self-employed, the USCIS is going to use Line 22 of your 2014 Form 1040 to determine if you are eligible. You have no employer letter or pay stubs. Any income year to date does not reflect what might be reduced by Schedule C business expenses. That's the problem when you are self employed.

So as long as your tax return Line 22 shows you qualify, that's about all you can do. Just report that number as current income. If you guesstimate something higher, you have no way to prove it. If your latest tax return can't prove enough, they would likely say you need a joint sponsor.

As a back up, I'll send copies of any pay stubs from this year and mention the amount earned to date in my cover letter.

Yes, if you work as a contractor and get paychecks and a 1099-MISC, you can include photocopies of those pay stubs. I would maybe include a statement and those behind the transcripts saying your year to date gross income is $xxx.xx. You work as a sub-contractor for XYZ . The cover letter may be discarded when they organize your file. Say what you want them to know right with the I-864, lined up with the evidence.
