Yep. He could have just worn a t-shirt under his robe with his proclamation, and exposed it at the end of a less contentious speech for dramatic impact.

However the school outing him to his parents was a bad idea .

So he was going to name another student, ridicule faculty members, and give a condescending FU speech... and come out not only to the world but his parents at the same time not even giving them the benefit of a little advance notice.. His back record suggests this is not in his character, he was probably going through a rough patch in his life (we have all been there) - Sounds like the school saved him from himself.

On the principle outing him to his parents - it was done just minutes before the speech with the assumption they already knew since the kid was just about to announce it to the entire world.

I do not know much about the school, Twin Peaks make it sound a girls school, but there is a nice brew pub around in the corner.
