It is so annoying when USCIS and/or doctors will not talk to me, they only will talk to my wife

My wife and I are happily married for 2 years and expecting a baby in November of this year. She is not good with legal or medical documents and always asks me to take care of it (which I'm fine with because I am very detail oriented).

She is conditional permanent resident from India, which she received from K-1 visa then we were married in USA. We just submitted i-751 and her permanent residence was extended, we are awaiting an interview date. The USCIS website does not recognize our receipt number, and when I tried to speak to human at USCIS, she would not give me any information unless she can speak to my wife (I am at work, wife is at home).

I guess I understand they think some abusive husband might try to find out where his wife is or whatever, but it's like they are treating me like a criminal based on nothing. Same thing happened when I tried to find out when my wife's OBGYN appointment was (they needed to talk to the wife). My wife likes when I talk to people on phone because sometimes they speak too fast or she doesn't understand exactly what they said, and she is too shy to say that sometimes.

I just wanted a place to rant. I don't like being treated badly, I love my wife and perhaps giving someone the benefit of a doubt once in a while shouldn't be a bad thing. I think these people are just so paranoid about psycho ex-husbands that they treat all husbands like criminals.

Welcome to the forum.

Regarding finding out your wife's current case status: re-read paragraph 5 of the Form I-797 (NOA1) I-751 Receipt/Extension letter. You should use the case number that will come with your wife's Biometrics appointment letter to check for progress.

For doctor, she should've received a release form and listed you as a person who can talk with the medical personnel on all her matters and they'll talk to you.

Can't you go with her to one of the appointments and have her tell the doc she wants you to deal with them and sign whatever paperwork is needed?

A person's privacy is taken seriously. How is the USCIS or the doctor to know you are who you say you are? They have the obligation to protect her privacy. Because she may have issues communicating you can easily do a three way call or use the speaker phone when speaking to the USCIS or her doctors. Best yet, attend any doctor appointments WITH her. :)

My husband set up all appointments for my medical examination and have no problem at all. Yes, when the doctor called and my husband answered the phone, the doctor will asked to speak with me directly which my husband understand.

Also, he always there when I had my appointment and in fact I always have him in inside the room when they did medical exam for me.

What’s criminal about a doctor’s office respecting your wife’s privacy or USCIS handling your wife’s application with confidentiality?

Nothing to do with benefit of doubt; neither USCIS nor the doctor can distinguish between Joe or Jogesh over the phone. No one likes being treated badly, and neither are you; privacy laws are rightfully enforced uniformly.

I'm not commenting on the communication pieces BUT for your receipt not working, it is the receipt number from the biometrics letter that you need. Have you received that letter? If you look at the NOA you first received it actually says right on it that you will need the number from your biometrics appointment in order to check your status online.

if you don't have that number from your biometrics appointment then you won't be able to check anything.

It's worth mentioning you can call and then have your wife say "I authorize you to disclose X and Y to my husband regarding my petition during the course of this phone call" and they will go ahead and do it. As others have said, it's a privacy thing. I've never had USCIS or other companies not allow me to update my wife's account or information when calling in and then having her give the verbal thumbs up. It takes half a minute, and although I've never done a conference call, I bet you could have a three-way call with you at work, your wife, and the organization in question. Then once she gives the okay she can hang up.

Yeah it's a privacy thing. Unless she lists you as another person to talk to they will deal only with the person mentioned in whatever document they have in front of them. While it may be an annoyance now, someday you will be thankful they followed that when it concerns your privacy.

An example of that is when we got a contractor for our house. He wouldn't deal with anyone but my husband whose name was on the contract although the house is in my name and so is the mortgage.

Three way call sounds like a great idea. Whenever I have called USCIS I make sure my wife is sitting next to me. I start the conversation with them and tell them she is sitting next to me if they need to talk to her. They always say yes and ask her if it's ok for them to discuss whatever with me and she says yes and hands the phone back to me. I have never had an issue talking with them like that. As far as Doctors just have her make it a part of her medical record that they can discuss her records with you. My wife has that on hers and usually seems to work ok. You may have to tell them it's on there though.

I had a great many times during my marriage when I would make a call (usually to a bank or credit card company) and say "I would like to discuss my wife's account with you. I will put her on the phone and she will give you permission" and then do just that.

Of course all you actually need if you want to game the system is a female to whom you give all her relevant identity information like SSN, DOB, mother's maiden name, etc. Theoretically if it could be proven someday that you or someone else impersonated her, there could be complications.

Please don't tell people how to game the system, even as an example. The reason we have such security measures is because of misuse...

What's legitimate about gaming the system? Plenty pressure on any expecting couple without complicating things further.
