Oakland to halt school suspensions for willful defiance

Mouthing off in class or failing to follow a teacher’s instructions will no longer lead to suspension in Oakland schools, a ban that will be phased in and be fully in effect just over a year from now, the school board unanimously decided Wednesday night.

Oakland Unified will become one of a handful of California school districts that restrict suspensions to more serious offenses and eliminate the punishment for willful defiance — a broad category of misbehavior that includes minor offenses such as refusing to take a hat off or ignoring teacher requests to stop texting and more severe incidents like swearing at a teacher or storming out of class. San Francisco and Los Angeles are also among those districts.

The state already bans suspension for willful defiance from kindergarten through third grade, and Oakland’s decision extends it through high school. The new policy, which goes into full effect July 1, 2016, also bans expulsions and the practice of involuntary transfers — moving students from one school to another — for willful defiance infractions.

Student Dan’enicole Williams, a McClymonds High School sophomore, said the ban will force educators and administrators to focus on why students are behaving a certain way rather than just suspending them.

So it will be ok to text in class, swear at the teacher, disrupt class, etc? Yea, that sounds like a plan.

So you can tell the teacher to Get F'd and it's ok.

Great Plan..........

No, you just won't get what you want out of that, which is to not have to go to school. I'd imagine there are still other disciplinary actions available and wouldn't be surprised if in-school suspensions come into wider use. These differ from regular suspensions in that the student still must attend school each day, but the student is then isolated from their peers and does their school work separately from their peers.

As long as there is still proper discipline, I can understand the suspension point as some kids just want to thrown out so they don't have to attend. It shouldn't turn the classroom into a free for all.

eliminate the punishment for willful defiance .... What does that mean to you ? .. To me it means no punishment. Talk back and argue with the teacher .. That will be fine . You will find a handful that desire to disrupt the class ... every class and they will run the schools. .

In context of this sentence "Oakland Unified will become one of a handful of California school districts that restrict suspensions to more serious offenses and eliminate the punishment for willful defiance," 'eliminate the punishment' refers back to the punishment given earlier in the sentence--suspension. Otherwise it would read 'eliminate punishment.' So the sentence MEANS "Oakland Unified will become one of a handful of California school districts that restrict suspensions to more serious offenses and eliminate [suspension] for willful defiance"

They have ISS - In School Suspension. Also, schools can opt to take your phone away for the day to office for parents to pick up if you are misusing it during class. I think it is good that teachers need to think more about what might be causing so many distractions in their classes. Sometimes it is their teaching method which isn't effective.

Yes, schools all have guidelines to follow that students and parents are privy too. Apply discipline according to the infractions, not blanket discipline for every infraction. Perhaps some people don't have teenagers at this time? Life has changed a lot since we were kids. No more corporal punishment. It's a new world.

I am sure the overall level of education will increase

Because, you know, suspending kids for failed discipline at home definitely educates them and sets them up for a better future than the one their parents are setting them up for on their own.

Let's deny education to people who don't have good parents!
