Temporary Long Distance Marriage - What evidence to collect prior to ROC?

Hello everyone,

My husband (USC) and I are most likely going to live apart for 8 months starting in July 2015 due to financial reasons. He is planning on moving to Las Vegas up until March 2016. My job is here in Orange County and I am up for promotion early next year so it is really difficult for me to leave. We are still definitely together and plan on taking turns to visit each other on weekends since Vegas is not that much of a far drive from Orange County.

We are eligible to file for ROC in June 2016. We want to plan this in advance and see what documents/proof we should collect in order to have a smooth ROC process given that we lived apart for 8 months in our 2 year marriage?

Anyone in a similar situation? Or was in the same situation? Your advice is highly appreciated.

I have been in a similar situation. In fact, I lived 2000 miles away from my wife for the entire duration of my marriage. Not only that, I ended up getting divorced. But eventually I was approved. So don't worry, as long as your marriage is genuine and you have enough documentary evidence, you will be fine. Even though you live apart you should still be able to show things like a joint bank account, joint tax returns and joint benefits (401k beneficiary, health insurance etc.). You can also keep a record of your trips to show that you still spend time together, plus phone logs. Also consider having wills drawn up.

Agree with above post. As secondary evidence, take photos of yourselves together in various locales and situations. As primary evidence, few things are as strong as wills, medical powers of attorney, and similar documents.

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, we of course have a joint bank account that we use for our joint expenses, joint tax return from last year, 401k beneficiary and will have joint health insurance starting next year.

How would you suppose we record trips to visit each other if we are driving between Orange County and Las Vegas? Pictures? With flying, it's easy since we just need to save the boarding pass or confirmation letter but I suppose we are driving more since it's cheaper that way.

Sorry, i just read your response after I posted my first response to lost at sea. We will definitely be taking plenty of photos (as if we need more, we already have so much!! haha)
