Where are you trying to rent a house or apartment? It all depends on the property manager/landowner on how they want to do that. If you have decent credit and put enough of a deposit down then there should not be a problem at all, but don't surprised if they are a little hesitant in letting you stay some place.

This is because there has been some cases of people paying the deposits on places to rent and the first months rent, then as soon as they move in start to complain about little mundane things. The people will then say that they will not pay rent until x, y, or z is done to fix the "problems", the land owners usually have to do the entire eviction process to get them out.

We are planning to go to Oregon. I find some apartments need income restrictions.

Since you currently don't have an income, I assume you have some rent money saved up? A lot of landlords will accept tenants without a job as long as you can put down a deposit plus show that you have enough money in the bank to cover three times the rent for the agreement period.

Best bet is to call up and enquire.

We've rented a house through a private individual. No credit check etc. apartment would have been harder as they ask for employment details and check your credit.

I enquired at a real estate agency and they said if I was willing to pay the deposit and a few months rent up front it should be fine.

We were in CA but also landed jobless (and no credit history!) and found a couple of agents/landlords willing to go this route, so if you have a credit record I imagine it wouldn't be a major problem. Ours wanted to see 6 months rent in the bank account but that might have been due to no U.S. credit record.
