Obama: 'No excuse' for violence in Baltimore

Actually that's not inaccurate. Apart from the desire to offload any responsibility by blaming the Democrats. These are people who have been ignore by successive governments. You can't excuse violence but it's totally understandable how a situation could come about where a huge number of people, poor educated and ignored by everyone rise up in anger.

People want to turn it into a partisan thing. They are just dishonest.

That was kind of my point. I keep hearing about how jacked up the Democrats are, yet the GOP isn't doing squat to help either. It's the same like here, when folks on the far right take shots at poor neighborhoods as liberal paradises, knowing full well a conservative wouldn't be caught dead trying to represent that place if you paid him to.

Oh sure. It's just easier to blame the other side than it is to be honest.

Perhaps LIB can regale us with his long support of low income blacks. I rather doubt it. My opinion is he would rather point fingers. After all, it's easy and it doesn't cost anything.

States with the largest poverty rates. 9 out of these 10 have a Republican governor. 9 out of these 10 supported Romney in 2012.

What do we learn? If you want to live in poverty, go to a red state. Your chances of ending up poor increase dramatically.

I think the conclusion is that if you a re poor the establishment doesn't give a toss. Some people would just rather lay the blame for it at the feet of one or other political entities. It's all bullcrap

That is true. I find it amusing when we're told that Republicans have the policies that fight poverty. And yet, where they govern, poverty doesn't decrease. In fact, it tends to be higher than elsewhere.

There's a real thought that all these things that plague black people are completely self inflicted. Very few people want to dig any deeper than a few smashed up cars and burned out buildings.

This dude is looking at life in prison if given the maximum sentence. Not to mention 500,000 for bail.

isn't being poor is a crime? don't we furiously hold on to the belief that poor people deserve their poverty?

Maryland as a whole is kind of odd in that, while it is firmly a Democratic state, with a Democratic city - we do from time to time, vote in Republican governors, and on occasion Democratic city leaders that are more independently minded. I can tell you that the last Republican governor we had may have been pretty likeable as a person but his policies were very unpopular and did not help things. Likewise O'Malley's policies as a Democrat left Baltimore city in some of the state it is in now (he bears a great deal of responsibility here and it's one reason people kind of want his head right now), and his policies as governor were just as unpopular. It remains to be seen what our current Republican governor will do, as he's a bit of a wildcard. The state and the city representatives have had a long tradition of butting heads and not being helpful to one another. You can see that clearly in the delay to bring the guard into the city and lack of communication between the two parties. There are a few Democrats that are remembered fondly in the city that did many wonderful things for people that are long gone. Those ones actually did care.

The problems in the city are complex but:

Economic

Jobs

Education

Racial profiling

Police policies

Corruption

Drugs

Gangs

Taxes

Lack of development, funding, outreach, or care to at risk citizens.

Housing and infrastructure

Are the big ones, to name a few. Poverty, lack of education, and jobs in the city doesn't just extend to African American families, but white families too.

You're poor because you want to be. Catchy slogan...

I thought it was because folks were lazy and just didn't want better for themselves and their families. You're saying it's more than sagging pants and rap music? Wow...

Yeah, I know right? Funny how that works.

If all the world's problems were caused by laziness... aw hell, it's hard to imagine such a thing. I don't know how some people manage it.

It's how they sleep at night. Better to blame the misfortunes of others on themselves than spend any real time actually looking into it and seeing what's really going on...

Not all of them. The poor white folk in Appalachia don't deserve to be poor. Obama made them poor 'cause he hates white folk. We sympathize with those victims of Obama's war on coal.
