Joint sponsor pulled out

So after waiting over a month for our joint sponsor to get her papers together, and then thinking she sent it all in, she has just told us today that she has changed her mind about being a joint sponsor. She says she didn't understand the huge responsibility it would be, even though I explained it several times and sent her the instructions and form over a month ago.

We have assets in my name in Sweden, which we could've sent in weeks ago but we're worried they're not gonna be accepted and that's why we wanted to play it safe with a joint sponsor. Do they accept assets more if they're in the US rather than in a foreign country? I can always have them sent over to my account in the US.

If you get arrested in the US, they have these bondsmen you can go to if you can't pay bail yourself. Do they have something similar for getting a joint sponsor for immigration?

If you are going to move the money over doing so now would make it simpler but they should be OK with a Swedish account.

I hope you're right. We're gonna have to go with that now. Just pisses us off that we could have done that over a month ago, if she had just been honest from the start about her concerns.

Checked with NVC and the US embassy in Stockholm and when it comes to assets, it's apparently three times the federal guidelines if the assets are in the US citizen's name and for a spouse. If the assets are in the beneficiary's name then the assets have to be five times the federal guidelines.

Both my husband and I are about ready to kill our joint sponsor... And we explained the process and checked with her so many times before starting this process, because we knew we would need a joint sponsor.

Sponsorship is a huge responsibility...it's all risk and no direct benefit to them.

So sometimes even family members can refuse to be joint sponsor.

If the table is turned to you to be a sponsor, I'm sure you will have similar struggle.

That said, does your US citizen spouse have any income at all?

If so, you can try to cover the income shortage with the asset.

However, I recall seeing some folks here not being successful in passing the

income (asset) requirement using solely the assets.

Yes, we understand that, which is why we spoke to our joint sponsor before starting our visa journey and explained what it meant and what her responsibilities where, which she accepted. We would have never started on this journey without a joint sponsor lined up, as we knew we needed one.

Once our petition was approved, for which she had already written an affidavit stating her intent to sponsor me, we told her that it was time for the financial sponsorship and was she still ok with it. Again she said she was and so we put together our papers and sent everything to her to add her things, which she said she was doing. It wasn't until a month into the NVC process that she changed her mind and told us she couldn't sponsor me.

We had asked others before her, who said no and that's fair enough but she said yes and made us a promise of sponsorship. You don't make someone a promise like that, especially with these huge implications, and then go back on your word. That is not ok!

My husband's income is zero and we have 3.5 time the poverty guidelines in assets so we're just gonna go with that and hope for the best. The worst thing is that I have a job offer for a full-time position once I enter the US but we're not even allowed to count that. How stupid is that?!

We just showed a U.S. Bank Account with 3x the amount ( about $55-60k). They were fine with that.

How is your husband surviving on zero income?
