Fastest way to get SSN post-green card

Hiya,

Is there a way to expedite getting a social security number once the CR-1 is approved?

I'm looking into employment opportunities in advance of the interview and want to get a sense of my earliest employability.

(Is it possible/permitted to get a job before having SSN in hand?)

First things first,get CR-1 approved,then you(him/Her) will be mailed SSN# in two weeks's time(I was told 1month in my case).

There is no way you can get employed without a SSN#.But,It wont hurt to start looking,bearing in mind that the CR-! visa could be denied.

My advice,take one step at a time.

Even though my in-laws marked yes on the DS-260 to have SSN created for them they never received them as a result of the request on the DS-260. Our situation was they needed to have numbers as soon as possible in order to apply for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare).

Ten days after they arrived they still haven't received their SSN, and the state health care exchange wouldn't process their application without a SSN, so my wife called USCIS. When she called USCIS she inquired if their information was in their master database or in SAVE. The rep was unhelpful, but gave her a number to SAVE. When she called SAVE she was told they don't speak to members of the public, but advised her to have them go to SSA. So, I took them to a local SSA office the next day. They needed the SS-5 (Application for Social Security Number) and their passports with their immigrant visa. The clerk only asked me one question, "Have they been to the US before?" I replied, "They have but never had a reason to need Social Security Numbers." After about 5 minutes on the computer the clerk gave me a printout and asked me to verify the information. I told him the info was correct and he then gave both of them receipts (letters saying their cards will come within two weeks). I did ask the clerk about the SAVE check and he said that they do it there, so basically if their information wasn't in SAVE then they wouldn't have gotten the receipt letters. The actual cards arrived in the mail 4 days later.

The actual cards come out of the Baltimore, MD area. I have also read on this forum that some have been lucky in going back to the office they applied for the SSN a day or two later and were able to get something with their actual SSN on it.
