hi.

I'm expecting EAD to come in a couple of weeks and I'd like to know if I can apply for a Drivers License just with EAD or do I need to get SSN first?

I know SSN takes like 2-4 weeks which is a lot!

Check the Florida DVM website http://www.flhsmv.gov/html/dlnew.html

I found in that website certain options for those that don't have a SSN. Check the website to see if you have any of the documents they request.

Good luck!

Thank you.

They requiere three documents.

I have the following:

EAD would work as the Green Card on the list.

Utility Bill as proof of address

In the SSN they requiere either SSN Card, W2, Paycheck or 1099 form. But I won't have any of those right away :(

So receiving the EAD I still have to wait a one more month in order to get SSN and DL.

hi.

I'm expecting EAD to come in a couple of weeks and I'd like to know if I can apply for a Drivers License just with EAD or do I need to get SSN first?

I know SSN takes like 2-4 weeks which is a lot!

Hi. It seems we are neighbors :) I live in Ft Lauderdale area too. In my case , I went to the DMV with my SSN and GC ( i already had it by then). Also was requested to bring 2 proofs of address in SFL (You can use utility bills under your name, etc).

They asked for my SSN at the DMV office so I would go and get your SSN first, but as you say that your EAD is about to arrive soon. You will have to wait for that first and THEN apply for the SSN. They don't accept an i-94 expired at SSN offices.

I know this because when I went to the SSN office in Oakland Park area, my i-94 had already expired by then so I was requested to bring the EAD and, also marriage certificate and passport. Yes, SSN takes a couple weeks to arrive.

Then when you have your SSN and EAD in hand, you can go to the DMV in Oakland Park and apply for your learner permit/driver license.

NOTE: If you never drove before, you will need to apply for the driver permit first and then for the driver license. This is the DMV you need to go if you live in Oakland Park. Thats the one I went and did my driver permit.

This is the website that tells you what documents you need to bring at dmv.

SSN website. There it tells you what documents you need to bring to apply for SSN. You can also complete the form online and take it with you at the office so you save time. Be there very early. Lots of people at that office.

You know, I live in North Bay, California....Last September I tried calling the DVM to ask some questions and it was impossible, the website was clear about the documents that I needed, but still a bit ambiguous about if I could drive with my country's DL during the 90 days (I-94 unexpired) and having the SSN...the DVM was in another town but just a short bus trip away, so I went there personally and got all my answers. Conclusion, I had to wait for the EAD, ...and funny thing, the laws in California changed and starting this january, the DVM started to accept applications from immigrants without documents as long as they can provide a valid passport and proof of residency, and at the same time in January I got my EAD.

Maybe if you call or go to the DMV personally you will know for sure. :)

For DMV, bring 2 utility bills (any bills that has your name and address will do) as proof of address. They asked me 2 at that office in oakland park. At the SSN office, you will only need your EAD, passport and marriage certificate.

Edit: When you have your EAD in hand, you go to the SSN office with that and your passport and marriage certificate. Also print and fill out the form online so you dont have to fill it there.

This is the SSN office in Oakland Park.

So the conclusion is: I really need to go get SSN prior going to DMV.

I hope people from the SSA office here work fast and deliver that as soon as possible. That's gonna add up at least 2 more weeks of waiting to start a normal life. Then add more time for the Drivers which is the most annoying part not being able to go places here.

One more question: Is it possible for them to give you the SSN number the same day or the next day??? I think I heard of somebody being able to go next day and asked for his number and they gave it to him. The actual card came few days later.

Thank you all.

Pretty much every state requires you to have an SSN to get a driver's license.

They used to give the numbers out the next day HOWEVER, you will need the physical card when you go to the DMV most likely. It only takes about a week to arrive.
