USPS misdelivered GC and welcome package

Hi everyone- I was on vacation when I got a notification that my GC has been approved (I did the 485 interview right before leaving for vacation).

I returned to US a week after Usps delivered my GC but I didn't find it in my mailbox. A point to note: I had mail forwarding set up since I left that address before I went on vacation but I was able to check both this old address and my new address but the GC mail wasn't in either place. I went to usps to talk to a supervisor and he mentioned it's probably misdelievred and now since it's been a week, it's difficult to track the package. I am just frustrated with the situation. They have successfully forwarded other USDHS mail such as I-130 approval but the welcome notice and GC priority mail aren't at either address.

I am thinking of going to the local uscis office to get the I-551 stamp in passport so that I have at least some proof of my new status. What should be next step? Please advice. Thanks.

Call USCIS and tell them you didn't receive the green card - btw, green cards can not be forwarded to a new address like other mail, instructions to USPS not to are printed on the envelope.

USCIS will issue you a new one. I can't remember how long exactly it took to get my replacement card, but it wasn't long. Make sure that you tell them USPS never delivered it. Oh, and make sure your name is on the mailbox.

One question - you have changed your address with USCIS, correct?

Thanks for your reply, Valerie. Yes, I gathered that Green cards are not forwarded but I didn't know this when I had set up forwarding. In any case, I was able to contact my previous landlord and have my mail checked there but didn't find it in the mailbox. USPS often mis-delivered mail/packages to the wrong apartment in my previous apartment complex.

Yes, I updated my address with USCIS as soon as I moved to my new (current) address.

Oh, and when you are talking to USCIS - ask them to read back your address to you. Although I always send in the paperwork for my husband and myself when I move, both times I have had to talk to them to get it updated in their system - they seem to have some kind of mental block about it!

Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure I do that. I'll call them and keep you posted on how it goes. I just wonder why "signature on delivery" option is not enforced on such an important document!

Did you have to pay anything for the replacement card? I read in other forums that people were told to pay around $450 for a replacement card and also had to do biometrics again.

No, if it was a USPS problem, there should be no fee. I wasn't charged anything. If you lose it yourself, THEN there's a fee. And yes, it is expensive. That's why you want to make sure they know it is USPS' fault. :)

Nope, they accepted me at my word. I think it happens a lot.

If it shows "delivered", you will have to pay $450 for i90. They don't charge when it shows "returned to sender." OPs status shows delivered so he or she will have to pay to have it replaced.

It'll be great if someone can mention what is in the welcome letter. Am I missing something important? I assume that with I-90 they'll only re-send the Green card and not the welcome letter.

It is an I-797 stating your approval and welcome to the U.S. It is not special. Don't worry too much. Meanwhile, you can get an I551 stamp by scheduling an info pass. Good luck.

Lately the "welcome letter" is nothing more than a tri-fold brochure.
