Living with husband's dad and proof of joint lease

Hello all,

As stated in one of my previous posts, my husband and I are still living with his dad, rent free, as my husband is only paid part-time (so we cannot afford to move out at the moment) and I don't have my EAD yet.

A little while ago, we sent out our AOS documents and have just received our I-797 confirmations of receipt in the mail.

Now we are starting to gather joint things: We already have a joint bank account (though the Chase employee that we talked to told us that we can't have a joint debit or credit card through them - it's a feature they discontinued years ago) and we're about to find out about a joint phone bill (family plan) but joint lease on an apartment is just not possible at this point in time.

Can my husband's dad write a letter stating that we live at his place rent-free and utility-free, which we can then present to USCIS at the interview or does USCIS need proof of us paying some rent? We can pay his dad about $100 montly, but that's about as much as we can do, given that gas and food are rather expensive.

I would love to get some second opinions from you guys.

There are some other documents you can provide, rent or mortgage is just one of them. Open an account with Wells Fargo, you can have a joint checking account.

How about wireless phone bills? car insurance or car registration?

Chase gave us a joint checking account. They just can't give us debit or credit cards which have both of our names on them. We, however, ordered checks from them which have both of our names.

We can set up a joint wireless phone contract.

Car insurance and car registration are both really tough since the car my husband drives also belongs to his dad and payments are more than we can afford.

We can only get joint health insurance if he gets promoted to full-time soon. Most other options are too expensive for us right now.

Yes. They know you are just married and do not have much evidence of your marriage yet. They typically just like to see a little bit of evidence that there is co-habitation and co-mingling your finances like married couples tend to do.

Continue saving up your evidence though. You will need plenty of that when it comes time for ROC.
