Hello everyone,

Thanks to the great guides an advice here we had our K-1 visa approved, no RFE's, and my fiance is now my wife. We got married April 2, 2015. So I'm following the flowchart here in the K-1 guide section and it says that after we marry change name with Social Security. We tried. Social Security said they couldn't because her new name is not the name with immigration. They said the "SNAP" system denied it but we could do the paperwork and they would submit by hand for further verification. What should we do? If we wait to change her name with Social Security what name should be put on the AOS paperwork?

Thanks

everyone

Use the married name with AOS.

When you get the EAD then go back and change the last name. As then you will have government document with the name changed.

It's that simple.

- SSA offices are not taught well and don't know that we can change our names.

Limitations like this are stupid in the new computer age. Maybe if punch cards were still used I could understand it, but there should be no limitation on length of names. I would tell the SSA that this is her legal lastname. What are YOU going to do as I cannot change my legal last name without a court order? Turn the tables on them. We hear several stories about them not being able to change a last name due to marriage which is a valid reason. In this case they will let her just shorten her last name. Priceless.

I'm sorry this happened to you, that really doesn't make any sense. You could call uscis and ask them what you should do in this case. You could always do the nontraditional way and change your last name to hers lol

That happened to me as well. I thought changing my last name to my married name was not that hard. It really shouldn't be, but SSA employees who don't know what they are supposed to do or think they know what they are doing ( :) ) make it hard. I put my married name on all the AOS documents.

Yes. That's so true!

That's for those SSA officers, not you, Cody and Daisy. :)

my sister got married and her new last name is 30 characters long. Ss office told her she had to shorten it by 12 characters or risk be fined $5000.

She was told rubbish. I researched this extensively when I took my husband's overly long surname, and that fine is incorrect. They simply enter the surname until they run out of space.

If you're nice to the SS employee who helps you, they might work harder on making the full name fit on the card (even though the system will not have the full name). It's perfectly fine, since the IRS checks the number and the beginning characters of the surname, not the surname in its entirety.

She should return to SSA and request a supervisor if she's fed the same information.
