I have heard conflicitng information with reagrd to the amount of US Dollars one is allowed to carry on him when traveling to US, or any other international destination. Two figures I have heard is $5,000 and $10,000. I am wondering if someone with information can help out here.

If you are carrying the USD withing the allowed limit, are you required to fill any paper work or declare that money to the Customs official or anywhere else before leaving? How about if you are carrying USD above (but no an insane amount, just little above) the allowed limit and have hiddent it in your carry on lugguage, how would the customs official detect this money? Do the USD show up on scanners?

Thanks

The limit is $10'000; anything above that, you can still bring, but need to declare.

I was hoping someone with personal experience could share some info. What happens when you declare it? They tax the USD?

I do not have any personal experience but based on all I have read, there are no taxes or penalties for it. If your case if particular interest, then of course there might be some hurdle. But I am just guessing.

FYI, I got searched at ISB airport and they found a small wad of Rupees on me which I usually carry. They made me go back through the security and get all of it exchanged and only let me carry Rs. 3,000.

The CBP officer suggested that I exchange it to USD but I exchanged it to AED as I had a stop over in Dubai. I figured I could use the dirhams instead of getting them exchanged later.

As for limit, it does not matter where you are coming from and which state you are landing, the max limit is $10,000. You may get harassed at PK airport to give up some of that money but don't have to. The only requirement is that when you enter USA, you file the http://www.fincen.gov/forms/files/fin105_cmir.pdfform and submit it to CBP officer here.

I thought State Bank of Pakistan reduce the limit from $10,000 to $5,000 for carrying USD out of country some time in 2014.
