Tourist Visa for my girlfriend to visit

If she tells the Embassy that we are planning to do that at a later date, will it hurt her chances of being granted a tourist visa?

Another thing for you to consider. When we were looking into the K-1 route, one of the requirements were to have met in person. If that's still the case, you cannot get a k-1 visa until you have met in person so you need to arrange that somehow. You're from Illinois so how about she gets a tourist visa to Canada and you fly/drive up and meet her there?

If you do meet and get married have your fiancé sign a PreNup.

That way your x wife can't take you to court to try to update her child support and include income from your new wife as part of the child support

Her income will never be included as part of child support if you and her sign a per nup........

Can you travel to Canada or Mexico without a passport if it's by car or boat? Back when I was looking for work, the railroads that were hiring all wanted a passport to if your rail line went over the Canadian border.

Actually that's not true. What prevents a future wife from paying any type of support is not filling taxes jointly. There will be a pre nup for other things though and other reasons.

As to you're earlier comment, are you sure you don't need a passport to go to Mexico if you're on a cruise?

US citizens do not require passport when entering Canada. They only need to show proof of US citizenship, such as a birth certificate, and photo identification, such as a driver's license. All other international travellers require passport to enter Canada, but not US citizens. See link below to Canada's equivalent to CBP:

The same article says that passport is recommended. I've personally seen many American friends get turned back without their passport. It's at the discretion of the officer.

The two reasons why Americans without passport gets turned away is because

1. The border officer didn't believe that the person was American and hence is not allowed to travel without w passport.

2. Because the person didn't bring proof of US citizenship AND government issued photo ID.

That is policy so OP, you can travel to Canada to meet girlfriend without a passport and hence meet the requirements of the K-1 of having met in the last two years.

Sorry I used the wrong word. They did indeed have proper state ID and bc and were still turned away. It does happen.

This is CANADA's policy for admitting US citizens; it has nothing to do with US requirements for when you need to use a US passport. The other part of the issue is then returning to the US -- for which a US passport is required (same for Mexico). While you would likely still eventually be admitted back into the US, it would not be without hassles and serious questioning as to why you left without a passport. You knowing that you do not qualify for one because of the child support issue, making it appear that you were trying to circumvent the passport lawas, could create even more questions.

Re another poster's suggestion re cruise -- you can do what is called a "closed loop" cruise without a US passport -- that's a cruise that begins and ends in the US. To take such a cruise, the fiance would need a US visa, so it defeats the purpose of meeting if she doesn't qualify for one.

Actually there's a treaty between amongst others Canada and the US called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, started to make it easier for Canadians and US citizens to cross the border. That initiative means that Canadians and US citizens can travel without passport across the border by land and sea. They need a government issued enhanced driver's license and proof of country status, e.g birth certificate. Many people live in e.g Canada and work in US and vice versa. That's so bad. ? I have the same worry every time I fly over to see my husband. Regardless of coming as a tourist and only staying two weeks and with strong ties to my home country, I still worry that I'll get a "bad" immigration officer who don't think I'm coming as a tourist. But if someone is rejected admission, they can ask for a supervisor. Thank God for small favours.
