Hello everyone,

I got married in the state of NY. everything has been going fine.

Got my Employment authorization document and i am waiting for the interview date to arrive.

However, yesterday i got news that my job might be in danger and i might get laid off.

is it possible to apply for unemployment in case i dont find a new job soon enough? even if my documents are still in process.

thanks for any advice

Yes, unemployment is not the same as welfare. Unemployment benefits is money your employer has paid for you in the event your job ends suddenly. This money is not coming from the government, although the government may be involved with the processing. You accepting unemployment is okay because in most states, you have to register for work and show you are looking for a new job in order to receive your unemployment benefits. Most people, however, supplement their unemployment with government assistance (food stamps, medicaid, housing, etc.). Accepting any other forms of public assistance will likely jeopardize your goals.

When/if you do sign up for unemployment benefits, make sure you read everything you sign as you may be signing up to receive other forms of government assistance. Sometimes these types of programs are bundled (especially if you live in an area with a high unemployment rate) and you may sign up for assistance that you really don't want.

good luck
