How to send money to Vietnam?

Hello everybody,

I would like to send money to my fiance, who lives in Vietnam, but I don't know a reliable and cheap way to do it. I only know about Western Mutual but I think it is pretty expensive to use their service. What is the most reliable and cheapest way to send money from USA to Vietnam? Also is there a way for her to receive the money in USD rather than VND?

I use Western Union to send my fiancee money in Vietnam and the rates are pretty decent. I'm not sure if she can receive the money in USD.

Yes, but only to Costa Rica and Mexico -- it has been flawless. The CR transfers have always been dollars and the Mexican in pesos. MG says they can send $$ to VietNam.

Not sure where you live, but if you live anywhere near little Saigon, then they have tons of places that transfer money and in USD if you preferred, most of them charge 1% or 2% of any amount over $100usd....

I was looking at xoom.com but i saw way too many negative reviews. I don't think i wanna risk it with them.

Western Union charges around $9 to send up to $500 to VN. There are thousands of Western Union agents in VN and your fiancee can opt to receive money in USD or VND (though I'd recommend USD).

The $9 fee is if you pay by bank wire or WUPay. If you pay by credit card, the fee is $10, I believe.

I send via my bank Wells Fargo. You just need to go into a branch and setup a wire service. You can send up to 3000 for 9 bucks. See if your bank in US is partnered with any banks here in Vietnam and they can wire there for your spouse to pick up. You can receive them as USD as well, and with the exchange rate as it is now, can make a decent chunk on top when exchanging at jewelry stores that have higher rates.

I dont think anyone mentioned it, but with Western Union, she has the option to receive cash in Vietnamese dong or USD. I use to use western union, but ended up just leaving behind my bank card to her the last time i was back there. My credit union only charges 1% for each foreign withdrawl so it was better than western union for us.

Who is Wells Fargo partnered with in VN? This will be good to know, since I may possibly retire there one day and need access to my account.

I know this doesn't help you at the moment, but my husband and I set up a joint checking account in Jordan(when he was still living in Jordan and I was back in the US) with ATM/debit cards and we could both deposit and withdraw money when we wanted.

If you both don't already set up a PayPal account and there is an option to send money to family, I find it cheaper than WU. Link your bank account (takes a day or so to approve) and then they can withdraw PayPal funds.
